Which Subaru all-wheel-drive models are the safest new vehicles in 2023? Consumer Reports (by subscription) says Subaru scores five new models still rated the best in class by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It is not unusual to see so many Subaru models on the safest new cars list because Subaru prides itself in being the safety leader. But only some of its vehicles are on the list, and its top-selling model is missing.
The Consumer Reports list for 2023 from the IIHS scores includes the 2023 Subaru Outback, which is among the best in the midsize car category. The 2023 Subaru Forester is with the best picks among small SUVs, along with the Subaru Solterra (built after October 2022).

The Subaru Ascent is among the best in the midsize SUV category, and the Subaru Legacy scores among the best midsize cars you can buy today.
But Consumer Reports says the list of the safest new vehicles you can buy today is much shorter because the IIHS tests are getting tougher. CR says, "And that means the cars that meet the standards for being a Top Safety Pick are safer than ever."
Where is the Subaru Crosstrek?
Subaru has five top models, but the automaker is missing last year's best-selling model. The Subaru Crosstrek is not listed among the safest new cars for 2023.
Two new IIHS tests get tougher.
Only 38 cars qualify for the highest IIHS achievement, a Top Safety Pick+ award, for the 2023 model year. The Crosstrek scored a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS this year and missed the highest TSP+ award. Here's why.
To earn the highest ranking of Top Safety Pick+, vehicles had to earn an "Acceptable" or "Good" score on a new side crash test designed to replicate a higher-speed impact with a larger vehicle. The Crosstrek scored a "Poor" grade in the new IIHS side crash test.

Another new test is the new moderate overlap front crash test from the IIHS, it's tougher than ever to pass, and the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV also earned a "Poor" rating for rear passenger safety.
The new test shows how much more challenging it is. The IIHS tested five small cars, including the Crosstrek. None of the five small cars IIHS tested earned the highest "Good" rating. The Honda Civic sedan and Toyota Corolla sedan are rated "Acceptable." The Kia Forte, Nissan Sentra, and Subaru Crosstrek are rated "Poor."

How does the next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek score?
The test results include the 2022 and 2023 Subaru Crosstrek model years. The Crosstrek has been redesigned for 2024, and the IIHS says it plans to test the all-new remodeled 2024 Crosstrek shortly.
