Best SUVs For Tall Drivers And Where New Subaru Outback And Ascent Rank Now

What are the best SUVs and cars for tall drivers and passengers? Check out the report and where the newly-upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback, Ascent, and Legacy rank now.

The 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV, Ascent 3-Row SUV, and Legacy midsize sedan all received new improvements. Subaru didn’t change the size of the three models, but are the newly-upgraded Subaru vehicles suitable for tall drivers and passengers?

According to a recent Kelley Blue Book (KBB) study, the Outback, Ascent, and Legacy are among the best new models for tall people over 6 feet 4 inches. KBB polled some of the taller drivers around their office for their thoughts. At 6 feet 4 inches, KBB says car reviewers Andy Bornhop and Michael Young “have tallied plenty of bruised knees and head bumps over the years climbing in and out of cars.”

They picked the Subaru models among the best new vehicles for taller drivers and passengers. Here are the top models.

The best headroom

The 2023 Subaru Ascent is the fifth-best SUV with the best headroom. The Buick Enclave is the top model, followed by the Volkswagen Atlas, Nissan Leaf, Genesis G80, and Subaru Ascent.

KBB says, “Subaru updated the Ascent for 2023 with more technology and a few styling enhancements. As Subaru’s largest SUV, the Ascent delivers scads of legroom and impressive headroom. Moreover, it boasts standard all-wheel-drive, solid resale value, and 28 mpg on the highway. Oh, and it can seat up to eight in its three rows of seats or seven with its available second-row captain’s chairs. There are plenty of reasons Subaru owners are rabidly loyal.”

The best legroom

The 2023 Subaru Outback is the fifth-best SUV with the most legroom. The 2023 Subaru Legacy is the sixth-best model for legroom. The Kia K5 is the top model, followed by the Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Outback, and Subaru Legacy.

KBB says, “The second of three Subaru models among our picks, the Outback benefited from a freshening for 2023. It’s still difficult for us not to think of the Outback as a wagon rather than the SUV it’s grown into. Driving this nimble all-wheel-drive machine doesn’t do much to make us think it’s an SUV. Despite its high driving position, the Outback is responsive in its handling and car-like in its ride. Taller drivers should have no issue with establishing a comfortable driving position.”

2023 Subaru Legacy

About Legacy, KBB says, “For the money, it’s tough for taller drivers to find a more well-rounded car. Even with standard all-wheel-drive, the Subaru Legacy gets a whopping EPA-estimated 35 mpg on the highway from its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) transfers power to the wheels.”

In another recent tall driver study, Consumer Reports found the thirteen best mainstream and luxury vehicles for tall people. Subaru has two models that make the 13-best list again and two models that are "other good choices."

The Subaru Forester compact SUV and the Subaru Legacy midsize sedan win their categories again. The updated report says the 2022 Subaru Outback 2-Row SUV and the 2022 Subaru Impreza compact sedan and hatchback are considered "other good choices."

Our take

Taller drivers looking for the best all-weather and all-terrain performance for winter driving should check out the 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV, Ascent 3-Row SUV, and Legacy midsize sedan. KBB says they are among the best vehicles for headroom and legroom for taller drivers and passengers.
