All-New Subaru Outback Onyx Edition And Legacy Sport Are Now Nominated For Best Interior

Subaru is getting noticed for its interiors, and it’s in a good way. See why the 2020 Outback Onyx Edition and Legacy Sport are now nominated for best interior.

Remember when Subaru interiors were the worst? They used lots of plastics, the fit and finish were inferior and the materials were low quality. Subaru has upped its game and now the Japanese automaker is being recognized for cabins that stand out in a good way. Ward’s Auto has released its 2020 10 Best Interior nominees and the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition and 2020 Legacy Sport trim are both on the list.

Subaru introduced the two new trim levels last year when both 2020 Outback and Legacy received a complete redesign. The outside metal didn’t get a lot of changes, but underneath and inside is where Subaru spent most of their money. Both models ride on the new Subaru Global Platform and come with improved ride quality. But the cabins get big upgrades too over the outgoing models.

The 2020 Subaru Outback and Legacy are both built at the Lafayette, Indiana plant. Ward’s Auto praises the American-built Outback Onyx Edition ($35,905) wagon for its bright lime green stitching that enhances the new two-tone gray interior and carries over to the second row. Other standout features include a high-quality woven headliner that meets up neatly with A-pillar trim, USB ports, and heated second-row seats.

Upfront there’s an auto-dimming mirror with compass, the steering wheel gets a toggle switch for navigating the gauge cluster, there’s a touch control menu along the upper edge of the center display screen, and the Onyx Edition gets all-new StarTex water-repellant material on the seats for easier cleanup after a day on the trail. In the back, there’s a generously proportioned cargo hold with a standard cargo tray and cover.

The 2020 Subaru Legacy Sport trim ($27,845) is the other model nominated for a Wards 2020 10 Best Interior. The sedan comes equipped with an 11.6-inch multimedia navigation screen, it’s upholstered in cloth and gets red stitching, crisply lit gauges, a tablet-style display screen, it’s singled out for its fit and finish and spacious second-row seats.

The 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition is the brand’s new trim that brings a model better fitted for outdoor enthusiasts. Wards Auto has chosen this new interior over the top-of-the-line Touring trim with leather and more luxury upgrades as its nominee. Stay tuned to see if Outback or Legacy actually score a 2020 10 Best Interior award. The winners will be announced in June.

As an owner, I love the interior looks and exterior too. However, the delay when pressing the touchscreen or changing the volume on the entertainment system really stinks and is unbearable. Sometimes, it reboots right in the middle of driving. Still no firmware updates either. Mentioning it to my dealer next oil change...we'll see if they can do anything.
