Elon Musk: Tesla Cybertruck Doors Won’t Have Handles, Here Is How They Might Open

Elon Musk on Twitter has said the Tesla Cybertruck won't have any handles. Here are some possible options to open the truck.

Just today I wrote an article discussing a note from Piper Sandler, a firm with a bullish stance on Tesla stock and a price target of $1,200, pointing out why the Cybertruck will likely be delayed.

The reason the analysts put forward was since the Cybertruck incorporates so many new technologies it is at a higher risk of production problems.

And now Musk has given us one more first of a kind feature. In a response to Twitter user, @JubanMohamed Musk said the Cybertruck will not have door handles.

Elon didn’t elaborate the reason behind removing the door handles but one possibility could be the difficulty of cutting into the 7X cold-rolled stainless steel body. During the Cybertruck unveiling event back in 2019 Tesla demonstrated how the body is bulletproof to a 9mm handgun.

And even if Tesla is able to cut into the body to have an opening for the door handle, it probably won’t be the best thing for the strength of the doors.

So if there won’t be a door handle what are possible ways to open the truck? The simplest and most obvious one would be to use a smartphone to unlock the truck and couple that with self-presenting doors like Tesla already does in the Model X.

And given Tesla’s improving image processing software and ultrasonic sensors the vehicle can sense if you are walking towards it or away from it to decide whether to open or close the door.

This implementation could also be coupled with a Model 3/Y type Key Card or a Key Fob. Also, on the new Roadster, Tesla added sensors on the B-pillar, and when you swipe the sensor with your fingers the doors open.

This, even though a novel approach is definitely doable. Especially for Tesla which has been building and selling vehicles with a self-presenting door since 2015.

One minor issue is the cost and complexity such a system will add to a vehicle that is supposed to start at 39,900. For a mass-market vehicle saving every penny matters and Tesla might have to find savings in other parts of the truck to off-set such the cost.

The Cybertruck seems to be Elon’s most daring product. And with all the new materials, features, and technologies coming with the truck, it is looking more out of this world than the looks already suggest.

Some of the new technologies coming with the Cybertruck are an exoskeleton chassis, 7X cold-rolled stainless steel body, bulletproof glass, 4680 battery cells with tables design, and Nickel cathode and Silicon anode.

So what do you think? Are you excited about the handless doors of the Cybertruck? What do you think Tesla will replace the door handles with? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments below.

I think it will have sensors that detect if you look at the door for a moment it will unlatch and reveal a little handle on the side that you can pull to open
