New Subaru Outback Breaks Cover In Cool Grey Khaki But You Can't Get One

How would you like a Cool Grey Khaki 2020 Subaru Outback? The cool color is available now in Japan but U.S. customers can’t touch.

Subaru just announced a new Cool Grey Khaki Subaru Outback but U.S. customers can only look and not touch. This one is for Japan customers only and will not be making it to U.S. shores. Subaru of America announced the new 2020 Outback and unfortunately, it only comes in conservative colors.

The current model top-selling Outback colors are Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, and Crystal Black Silica. The other colors for the 2020 Outback model change are Autumn Green Metallic, Abyss Blue Pearl, Cinnamon Brown Pearl, and Magnetite Gray Metallic.

Subaru knows who their demographic is for their flagship model and the Japanese automaker doesn’t want to do anything that will mess up its formula for success. But there are some customers who want new colors on that exterior besides Wilderness Green Metallic. So why not any cool colors?

Crosstrek gets "Cool Gray Khaki” and it’s going over big with a younger generation who are the biggest demographic buying the new crossover. Because Crosstrek attacks a younger buyer, older Outback lovers get left out of the fun colors. One of our readers told us, “Outback needs cooler color choices, instead of the boring colors they offer! It needs an orange!”

Japan-spec Subaru Outback

Outback fans would like new fun colors like the new-generation Crosstrek with "Sunshine Orange” and the new "Cool Gray Khaki," a shade that can also look a light shade of blue depending on the light. Subaru knows the Outback SUV/Crossover typically attracts an older demographic so the Japanese automaker must think they won’t buy them here in America.

Maybe Subaru Corporation is testing the more contemporary color on Outback in Japan first to see how it sells before they commit to it in North America. We think U.S. customers would buy more of the Cool Gray Khaki or Sunshine Orange than executives at corporate think. So if you would like to see new colors on the newly-redesigned 2020 Outback, leave us your comment below and tell Subaru what new colors you’d like to see.

The new sixth-generation 2020 Subaru Outback begins arriving in dealer showrooms this month. Subaru of America builds it at their U.S. plant in Lafayette, Indiana for North America customers, but you won’t see the new SUV wrapped in Cool Grey Khaki.

Oh my goodness...I feel like Sunday is not using good logic with it's paint options. It is not logical to say that our car sells well because it is painted conservatively... There are so many reasons besides paint color someone might choose a Subaru. I for one am so tired of boring colors on my two foresters... Please please please... Offer better cooler colors with black interior on all your cars... Not just the inexpensive cars.

Cool grey kahki for sure!!! Outbacks are great for all ages and they should provide these color options as something that differentiates them from other traditional SUV retailers.

Every color should be available for every model of Subaru.
As the 2010 Forester I currently own is a little tight for me at 6 foot, I'm looking to move up to the Outback or Ascent. Having a cool grey, bright yellow or orange color would be ideal. I'm 52 and not into any of the current drab colors offered for the 2020 Outback. As I am partially colorblind, I like yellows, which I see the best, and dislike greens, which I have the most trouble with.
Maybe Subaru would benefit from polling current owners to see what colors they would like to have.

We just purchased a 2019 limited outback in late August. We were unhappy to find out we couldn't purchase in cool gray khaki. We are in our sister's. Had to settle for silver gray.

I was disappointed the 2020 Outback comes with Ivory interior with so few exterior colors. I wanted Ivory interior with Brown exterior, saw that wasn't available, so settled for a 2019 model to get the colors I wanted.

Give me a manual tranny that may drive a CVT underneath. I think this is so possible even mimicking a clutch system to shift gears. I like the rest.

I, for one, will not purchase any car with black interior. If I can't get white, then cream/tan/beige or as the least preferable option, grey. I am thinking of purchasing a 2019 or 2020 Outback in the next few months but only with the above mentioned interior colors. For exterior, I would love to see Orange, a true Bronze, an outstanding metallic Gold that I've seen on a few vehicles (just don't remember what makes) and The RED that's on Mazda and Ford vehicles. Also, why are the two newest Suburu wagon models without tinted windows? Cheapens the look, in my opinion. Remember the bronze tinted windows on the Lexus? Loved that. Why is it no longer done?

LOVE the cool gray khaki color but am more interested in a forester or outback. Please step up your color game in these models Suburu!!

Absolutely want the colors on the Outback to be more organic like the Crosstrek and other manufacturers offer. Current colors are stuffy and conservative. I am an older consumer (68).
Also, and more important, please create a car that can be flat towed like a jeep. You are missing a huge RV owner demographic that would love to have a Suburu for their dingy!

LOVE the cool gray khaki color! Fingers crossed Suburu corporate will realize their mistake and bring it to the US too!!

I bought a 2010 Forester in Paprika Red, which is more like a burnt orange. I refuse to give up this car to buy another Forester until they offer a better choice of colors. Don't want to consider looking at a different manufacturer, but they may force me to do so.

Definitely cool grey khaki. Also would like to see a pretty pale green and a pale frosty blue
. I don't understand why the last 2 green Outbacks were even produced. They are truly horrible.

I have seen the Cool Gray Khaki color driving around here, and I am totally in love with it. I am super disappointed that I can't get it in the Outback however. I am not exactly in the market for a new vehicle at the moment, but was going to try to make it work so I could get that color because I figured it was temporary. But unfortunately I can only find it in the Crosstrek. Guess I'll continue to wait to join the Subaru family.

My wife and I are in our 70’s and have a 2018 Crosstrek in Cool Gray Khaki. We would like to get a new Outback in that same color but now find the color is not offered in the US. We’ll probably delay a purchase until the CGK color is offered.

Please add Cool Gray Khaki for the 2020 Outback's in America.

I'll trade in my Forester for one immediately!

Thank you Subaru

I am on the market for a 2020 Outback Limited XT. Was super disappointed that it is not available in the Cool Grey Khaki!! It was definitely my first choice!

Rita Storie (not verified)    May 17, 2020 - 11:00PM

Who ever chooses the colors for the Outback does not know much about color. ROYGBIV can make a lot of interesting colors... What's with all the white(reflects all colors), Black (absorbs all color) and Grays (a mix of all and none)?? Sick of these three choices in ALL cars.. Hire some color experts! PLEASE!! When I buy a new car I think I should have the color I want!! and I do not want WHITE, BLACK or SHADES of GRAY

Wendy Moore (not verified)    November 29, 2020 - 4:58PM

I'm a 55 year old female and I wish that all Subaru models were available in the Cool Grey Khaki. The Crosstrek is too small for me, but Cool Grey Khaki is my absolute favorite color! I think a lot of women in my age range would like it too.

C (not verified)    December 10, 2020 - 7:20AM

OFFER NEW DIFFERENT UNIQUE, EVEN BRIGHT, COLORS! AND OFFER MORE SPORTY OPTIONS IN THE OUTBACK LIKE YOU DO THE OTHERS! IT'S WHY I BOUGHT A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE INSTEAD OF AN OUTBACK. THEY ARE TOO PLAIN. I've heard many other people who really like their features and what the car offers as far as flexibility, ground clearance, AWD, etc.... but they are WAY vanilla! Subaru is missing an entire demographic of younger hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, adventurers for whom the Outback would be great because you're unwilling to spice up things a bit!

Please bring the cool color of khaki grey to North America! I am baby boomer and still want color in my life.
