Which new 2024 Subaru model year is the most reliable? Check out the most updated Consumer Reports ranking. There is one new model that stands far above the rest.

Are Subaru vehicles reliable? According to an updated Consumer Reports ranking (by subscription), one Subaru model is far ahead of the others. I cover Subaru's reliability scores annually, and this year's scores are worth noting for shoppers looking for a 2024 model-year Subaru vehicle.

How does Consumer Reports (CR) score reliability?

Every year, CR asks its members about problems they've had with their vehicles in the previous 12 months. This year, they gathered data on over 330,000 cars from the 2000 to 2023 model years, with a few early-introduced 2024 model years.

CR studies 20 trouble areas, from nuisances—such as squeaky brakes and broken interior trim—to major bummers, such as potentially expensive out-of-warranty engine, transmission, EV battery, and EV charging problems. They use that information to give reliability ratings for every major mainstream model. They weigh the severity of each type of problem to create a predicted reliability score for each vehicle, from 1 to 100.

Two Subaru models are predicted to be much more reliable than the average new car:

Three models are predicted to be more reliable than other new cars:

  • WRX performance car
  • BRZ sport coupe
  • Impreza compact hatchback

Four Subaru models are predicted to have about average reliability when compared to other new cars:

  • Outback midsize SUV
  • Ascent 3-Row SUV
  • Subaru Solterra compact electric SUV
  • Subaru Legacy midsize sedan

Subaru's 2024 models ranked from best to worst, and the reliability score rated from 0 to 100.

  1. 2024 Subaru Crosstrek (99)
  2. 2024-2025 Subaru Forester (82)
  3. 2024 Subaru WRX (78)
  4. 2024 Subaru BRZ (76)
  5. 2024 Subaru Impreza (69)
  6. 2024 Subaru Outback (50)
  7. 2024 Subaru Ascent (49)
  8. 2023 Subaru Solterra (47)
  9. 2024 Subaru Legacy (47)

The good news is that Subaru has no new 2024 model-year vehicles, which are expected to have less than average reliability compared with other new cars.

The redesigned 2024 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV nearly has a perfect score of 100 compared with other new cars. The Forester compact SUV is the other standout model, with a score in the 80s. The surprise model is the WRX performance sports car that gets a high score and is now a recommended model by Consumer Reports.

The BRZ sport coupe has always been a top reliability pick, along with its comparable Toyota GR86 cousin. The newly redesigned Impreza compact hatch is also a more reliable choice for compact car shoppers.

Should you avoid the Outback midsize SUV, Ascent 3-Row SUV, Solterra compact EV, and Legacy midsize sedan?

The four models have good reliability, but customers should know there have been some issues with the four vehicles. It should not deter new car shoppers from buying these models. The models are expected to have about average reliability compared with other new cars.

Crosstrek & Impreza are the exact same vehicle. The crosstrek is just on taller suspension. So unless that 30 point difference all comes down to suspension (it doesnt) that shows just how accurate CR is here.
