The New Subaru Legacy Sedan Goes From The Worst Performer To Nearly First

The 2023 Subaru Legacy sedan has been Subaru's worst-performing model in the lineup. But not anymore. Check out Legacy's surprise sales and how it was nearly the top-performing model in August.

What happened to the 2023 Subaru Legacy sedan? Sales have come roaring back, and the sedan is now up in sales for three months in a row. In June, Legacy was up 15.8%, July (up 34.8%), and August (up 45.8%). The Legacy is on an upward trend in sales performance

The Legacy sedan jumps back into the conversation.

The 2023 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan was up again in August and jumped again with an impressive 45.8 percent increase in sales, with 2,765 models delivered to customers in August compared with 1,896 sales in August 2022. The Legacy sedan is up 6.6 percent in the first eight months, with 16,895 models sold to customers in 2023.

Legacy, at 45.8 percent, is nearly first and just below the Forester is sales performance. The Forester was up 45.9 percent, the most significant percentage of increase of any model and just 0.1 percent more than Legacy. 

All sedan sales are down.

It's not just the Subaru Legacy; sedan sales are down across all car brands. New model customers are choosing SUVs and crossovers over the sedan body style. SUVs offer more utility and versatility than a sedan. Subaru dropped the Impreza sedan because of its slow sales.

Are the Legacy's sales enough to save it?

With the Legacy's newfound sales performance, will it be enough for Subaru to keep it around? A new report from Automotive News (by subscription) says Subaru of America may be considering dropping the Legacy sedan to make room for new electric SUVs coming to U.S. customers in the next few years.

The report says Subaru may take the Legacy manufacturing and move it to Japan like they did the Impreza earlier this year. Subaru of Indiana Automotive still manufactures the 2024 Legacy coming this fall.

What's new for 2024 Legacy models? 

The Base Subaru Legacy dome light has been upgraded to LED. The 2024 Subaru Legacy Sport trim level now comes standard with the Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system featuring a Harman Kardon speaker system with a 576-watt equivalent amplifier.

What is the price of the 2024 Subaru Legacy?

For the 2024 model year, the Legacy sedan is still available in five trim levels. The base is priced at $25,985, Premium ($28,285), Sport ($35,585), Limited ($33,035), and Touring XT ($39,285). Destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,090).

The Subaru Legacy is trying to make a comeback with improved sales three months in a row. Will it be enough to save it? Stay tuned.
