Which compact SUVs are the most reliable and fuel-efficient? A recent Consumer Reports (by subscription) study recommends eleven new models, and the 2023 Subaru Forester was number one previously this year but now ranks as the second most reliable and fuel-stingy new SUV you can buy this year. A hybrid model beats the Forester.
Consumer Reports compiled the compact SUVs that scored well in their road tests have average-or-better predicted reliability ratings and get 28 mpg overall or better. CR says the 2023 Forester compact SUV is the second best among all compact SUVs they recommend. Subaru Forester now ranks #2 of 24 Compact SUVs.

The Consumer Reports' eleven most reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs are the Honda CR-V Hybrid with a score of 88, Subaru Forester (87), Lexus NX Hybrid (87), Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (83), Toyota RAV4 Prime (81), Kia Sportage Hybrid (80), Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (78), Toyota Corolla Cross (77), BMW X1 (77), Lexus UX (75), and Ford Escape Hybrid (70).

Is the Forester reliable?
The 2023 Forester scored 4/5 in predicted reliability and is expected to be much more reliable than other new cars.

"The popular Forester delivers a satisfying combination of a roomy interior, excellent visibility, commendable fuel economy, simple controls, a comfortable ride, and responsive handling. A new Forester hybrid trim level would improve fuel mileage and impress many buyers. With gas prices rising, new hybrid models from the competition are selling well. But Subaru doesn't have a Hybrid SUV. New hybrid and electric models are coming, but Subaru is behind the curve.
