The Pros and Cons of the 2020 C8 Mid Engine Corvette Stingray

The 2020 C8 Corvette is almost here but before you put your order in let's talk about the pros and cons of the new redesigned mid engine Corvette.

The all new C8 Corvette from Chevrolet has really mixed things up over past iterations of the Corvette. After the July 18th reveal date the car has been met with very high praise but that doesn't mean it isn't without naysayers. The Corvette has always been front engine rear drive and due to that fact there are many purists out there that don't think Chevrolet should have changed the layout to mid engine.

The Pros Of The 2020 C8 Corvette

The C8 Corvette has a staggeringly large list of pros so we're going to keep it simple and stick to the main talking points.

The biggest pro for this car has to be the pricetag. The base model C8 Corvette will start under 60k. We don't know yet how much under 60k it will be but pricing should be available soon so for now, we'll just assume 59,999.99 and that's still fantastic.

The second largest pro for this car is the 0-60 time being sub 3 seconds. This is huge and it pushes this car into supercar territory by itself.

The third pro would be something that massively helps this car hit that sub 3 second 0-60 time and that is the dual clutch transmission. There aren't many cars out there that you can get nowadays for under 60k that come standard with a dual clutch transmission.

Those are the 3 main "pros" to the C8 Corvette but here are a few quick honorable mentions: dry sump oil system in base or Z51 package, 14 speaker Bose stereo system, Z mode button for quick ride control changes, 12-inch infotainment screen, or how about the removable targa top?

As you can see there are a lot of reasons to purchase this car but it isn't all good stuff. There are negatives that we will get in to but after reading the pros is there really any con that would make you not purchase this thing?

The Cons Of The 2020 C8 Corvette

Admittedly, there aren't as many cons to this car as there are pros and the cons we're going to talk about are complaints I've heard on the internet. They are not my opinion but just shared experiences I've seen on the Corvette forums, etc.

The single biggest con I've read about this car is dealer markup. This isn't so much a problem with the car as it is an issue with the dealerships but it is a huge con at least for the few months. The C8 Corvette has so much hype behind it that a lot of the dealerships out there are going to take advantage of it by charging a premium on top of MSRP. Unfortunately, there isn't really a way around this (depending on the dealership) and if you really want the car it may be your only option.

Con number 2 would be no manual transmission option. This is one that has been beaten to death but it's still something I read a lot online. Along with the Corvette purists that believe the engine should have stayed in the front of the car, these people also believe that a manual transmission should have been offered as well. While I don't disagree, I can see the end coming for the manual transmission so this wasn't a surprise.

We recently heard from Tadge Juechter on this topic and he flat out said that no manual option is coming for the C8 Corvette.

Next, and final topic in the con category would be no center exit tailpipes. This is another topic from those Corvette purists we've discussed a few times in this article. They don't believe the center exit exhaust is something that should have been changed on the C8 Corvette and again, while I would have liked to have seen the center exhaust myself, there is a reason it was moved, there is an engine there now.

As I'm sure you can see, the pros heavily outweigh the cons on this new C8 Corvette but nevertheless, as with anything brand new, there are people who hate to see the change. What are your thoughts on this new Corvette?

You really need to get out more. The 4 largest Corvette dealers in the country are all selling the C8 at MSRP, as are many (though certainly not all) smaller dealers.

I am curious about maintenance cost for the C8 Corvette because of the new engine configuration. The exhaust not being in the center is not a con for me, since the C1, C2, C3 and C4 did not have the exhaust in the center. People who are Corvette enthusiast would know that the center exhaust came about on the C5.

I had a chance to check out the new vette in S.D. and had asked the rep. about oil changes, the oil changes most likely would have to be at the dealership due to access from underneath the car which would have to be on a lift. Bummer, most of the time I change my own oil due to having a few issues and had to bring my cars back to the dealer. I like to do most of my own work that I can trust and not having to trust anyone else to get it right the 1st. time. This is a 1st. yr. proto type and will have bugs like all 1st. yr. auto's. I did like the car and would like to pick 1 up in a few years as soon as they get everything sorted out. I did hear in the past Z06's some owners having issues with over heating and head issues. Will wait and see!!
