It is quite odd that Land Rover is planning to build a competitor to the likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, but who are to judge.

We first learned about the existence of this vehicle, codenamed L560, back in March. The model would use the Jaguar's F-Pace's platform and feature a range of six and eight-cylinder engines. British publication Car got their hands on the first spy shots of L560 or Velar as they call it. The pictures show the model retaining the basic Range Rover Sport design, with a narrower greenhouse and a steeper rake on the roof.

Velar?

Yes, Velar. The name is derived from the Italian word 'velare' meaning to cover or veil. Velar was the codename for the original three-door Range Rover during the late sixties. Some of the prototypes actually feature the Velar name as a way to confuse industrial spies.

Aside from the spy shots and the odd name, do we know anything else?

The model will have some sort of off-road ability, but nothing quite like its brethren. Car says a range of six and eight gas and diesel engines will be on offer. Also, this vehicle is further along in development than anyone thought. Car reports that the Velar will sometime early next year, with sales following sometime thereafter.
