What Do People Think Of The 2024 Lexus GX 550?

Reddit discussions regarding the 2024 Lexus GX 550 are heated and opinions vary quite a bit.

Ever since the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser arrived, people have been comparing it to its more luxurious counterpart from Lexus. While both models share the same platform and overall styling, there are a few key differences between the J250 twins from Lexus and Toyota.

With less than $3,000 price difference between the two and the fact the Lexus GX features a V-6, you would assume the more luxurious version of the SUV is better value for money. While MSRP and dealership prices, often, differ by a significant margin, this is a topic that deserves a separate article.

Many people have opted to buy or are considering buying the 2024 Lexus GX 550 and they are not shy about sharing their thoughts on Reddit. Here are a few key takeaways from the web discussions on Reddit.

Many Reddit users share that they went for a 2024 Lexus GX due to the combination of reliability and luxury you get for the money, but they also worry about longevity due to the plethora of complex electronics employed in newer models.

Reddit user aventuSD said “The GX is popular for its mix of reliability, longevity(quality), capability and aftermarket 4x4/overlanding support. There's a reason people are readily paying 15-20k for clean almost 20 year old cars.

It's always been a sum of its parts kind of thing rather than a standout SUV or "The best choice. There are tons of better SUVs for the road and better SUVs and trucks for off-road. If you remove perceived longevity/reliability/quality you got just another SUV that can off-road. People have their doubts about the new TT engine, tons of electronics and automated features, "flimsy" body panels, and a muted interior. I think the GX community is upset the 550 is now "just another SUV".

User JPD232 shared a video (which I have reshared above this paragraph) from a fresh GX 550 owner who upgraded from a GX 460. While the owner is happy with his choice, he shares that the new Lexus GX 550 has more body roll than the old GX 460. This may deter some GX 460 owners from upgrading to the new Lexus SUV.

Reddit user komrobert commented: “Woah, more body roll than 460?? I will admit mine with air suspension in sport mode is actually a very good-handling truck, but I thought the 550 would be even better”.

This coincides with many Lexus GX 550 reviews, sharing that the 2024 Lexus GX is less dynamic and softer compared to the previous model. Despite the luxury SUV differing in some key areas compared to the J250 Land Cruiser, it seems to be more utilitarian than before and closer to the Toyota version of the SUV.

Other users like SwordfishOld2735 share that this is, likely, due to people driving in Comfort mode, which is the softest setting of the SUV's adaptive KDSS suspension.

Has the 2024 Lexus GX 550 become a bit too utilitarian?

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 features a twin-turbo V-6, the Land Cruiser J250 doesn't have

The same video by NotWG talks about the interior, which is another concern, shared by many Reddit users. The general complaint here is that the interior has become a bit too spartan for a Lexus. Some would describe it as "rental car interior”.

A recurring theme among new Toyota SUVs and pickup trucks is cabin noise. Additional insulation around the front doors is one of the most popular modifications customers do to the Toyota Tundra and the same might be true for the J250 platform.

Nervous-Manager-9756 said: “I’ve owned Lexus since 2003.RX 300, GS 430, GX, the last 3 gen of LX’s and now GX 550. The thing I hate about the new GX is the cabin noise. I don’t know if it’s the Overtrail issue or all of the GX models. People have issues with the tech, but it has everything most people need. The semi-auto drive works great. my wife’s LX 600 doesn’t even have it. Is it better than a Tesla auto drive? No, but it’s going to last longer and any issues, there is a body shop or a mechanic down the street. please stop bashing the vehicle until you own it”.

Should you get a 2024 Lexus GX 550?

Yes. The Lexus GX 550 has become more rugged and utilitarian, but still packs understated luxury with lots of cool tech. The GX has become less flashy, but more eager to get dirty and go overlanding.

The interior is functional and still luxurious enough at a price not that much higher than the J250 Land Cruiser. The twin-turbo V-6 engine is relatively trouble-free despite some owners reporting engine problems. As we found out, those are very few and far in-between and replaced under warranty.
