Subaru announced the newly refreshed 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport will arrive this summer, and it’s the new trim you have been waiting for. It’s coming with a more powerful fuel-efficient 2.5-liter engine, suspension upgrades with improved off-pavement capabilities, and new exterior treatments. You can order one now from a Subaru retailer but it may take some time to get here.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is in short supply and Torque News reported it’s now one of the 10 hardest to find cars in America. The Crosstrek’s short supply is partly due to the Subaru plant in Gunma Japan being shut down for eight weeks due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

In a new report from Subaru Corporate, they said its plant production in Japan where the Crosstrek is manufactured, saw a big decrease (-46.3 percent in June) “as a result of production volume adjustments through June 19 due to the spread of COVID-19.”

The Subaru Crosstrek is only made in Japan and not here in the U.S. like Outback and Ascent SUVs where plant production has been ramping up. Subaru Indiana Automotive had an 18.7 percent increase in production starting in June.

We reached out to a Subaru retailer near Denver, Colorado, and they told us the new 2021 Crosstrek would be arriving “mid-August” and as of last week only had three 2020 Crosstrek models in inventory. Current supplies of the 2020 Crosstrek are dwindling and new arrivals are slow.

One of the largest Subaru dealers in the Western U.S. only has seven 2020 Crosstrek models in inventory and 50 are 2021 models that have been ordered and are “in transit” to the retailer.

Some of the newly-refreshed 2021 Subaru Crosstrek models will begin arriving in about two weeks but most will take longer to get to U.S. shores. If you do order a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport now, don’t expect to get a good deal on the new subcompact SUV. Our source told us they will be asking full retail (MSRP) and won’t be offering any incentives on the new models.

Look for Torque News to bring you a first look and test drive of the new 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport as soon as we get our hands on one. Stay tuned.
