Subaru is about to get a lot more competitive in the Global Rallycross Championship. David Higgins who drives a 2014 WRX STI for Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT), will return to the Red Bull Global Rallycross action on September 26-27 in Seattle. Higgins will be driving a Vermont SportsCar prepped 2014 Subaru WRX STI. But we would like to know when Subaru will enter the new-generation 2015 WRX STI in the GRC Championship series.

Fans want to see the 2015 STI GRC

Subaru Rally Team USA’s Red Bull Global Rallycross team comprised of Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen have been running the 2014 WRX STI GRC cars all season. Vermont SportsCar builds and maintains the cars and a 2015 WRX STI has been in their shop before the season began. Subaru even unveiled the new 2015 STI in GRC trim at the New York International Auto Show in April. Fans would like to see the new 2015 STI GRC, but Higgins will return to GRC driving a previous generation 2014 WRX STI.

Higgins is familiar with GRC

Higgins will join Subaru’s Lasek and Isachsen at the Red Bull Global Rallycross at the series’ Seattle round, held at DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie. Higgins isn’t new to GRC and has worked extensively as a test driver for SRT USA and has accumulated extensive miles behind the wheel of the team’s WRX STI GRC cars. Higgins last competed in GRC in 2012.

Higgins made four appearances at Red Bull GRC-sanctioned events, including X Games appearances in 2011 and 2012. He took two podium finishes, including a bronze medal in head-to-head competition at X Games in 2011, and was a runner-up finish in Colorado in his series debut. He has maintained his presence at GRC events working as a spotter for Subaru teammates Bucky Lasek and Travis Pastrana.

Higgins itching to get back to GRC

Higgins is excited to be returning to GRC and it sounds like he’s been itching to get back to the wild action. “This is something I have been waiting to do for such a long time. I’m very grateful to Dirtfish Rally School for the support to make this happen for me. I have four years of frustration to get out of the system after doing many miles testing these amazing cars and helping out on events with the team. I now can finally show up with my helmet and race!”

Craig Drew will serve as spotter

David Higgins and Craig Drew have been a great team and have mathematically secured their fourth consecutive Rally America driver’s championship with one round remaining. Drew will be a familiar voice in Higgins ear at GRC and will be serving as his spotter for the GRC event. Drew has worked as Bucky Lasek’s spotter for most of this season and has built up lots of experience this year.

Red Bull Global Rallycross Seattle will serve as the ninth and next to the last round of the 2014 Red Bull GRC season. The event will also mark the series’ return to DirtFish, which hosted the second-ever Red Bull GRC event in 2011. An all-star cast of drivers will compete for the overall victory in two full days of racing action. For more info on Red Bull Global Rallycross Seattle, visit redbullglobalrallycross.com/SEA.
