Subaru WRX/STI 2.5L Engine Failure Lawsuit; What Owners Can Do Now

Subaru WRX/STI owners who had engine failure have benefits coming. Here are the steps you should take.

If you own a 2012-2017 Subaru WRX or WRX STI with an EJ25 2.5-liter turbo engine, you could have an issue with engine failure. A class action lawsuit was filed against Subaru of America (SOA) because of a defect within the engine manufacturing which could lead to premature engine failure. It was settled by the Camden, N.J. automaker recently, and the suit estimates the number of WRX/STI owners effected could number more than 100,000.

What should you do if you own a 2012-2017 Subaru WRX/STI?

The settled lawsuit contends the problem in the WRX/STI 2.5-liter engine was caused by “inadequate oil lubrication to the bearings and crankshaft” causing “sudden and catastrophic engine self-destruction as overheated internal parts seize” and by “severe driving conditions.” If your EJ25 engine fails in your WRX or STI, it could cost you $6,000 or more to get your 2.5-liter turbo Boxer engine repaired.

The recent settlement allows for WRX/STI owners to receive from $3,500 up to $6,500 if they had this problem and if they got it repaired at an independent repair shop, but you must produce your receipts. WRX/STI owners who had engine repairs made at an authorized Subaru dealer can get 100% reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses. Subaru is also extending the powertrain warranty up to an additional eight years on 2012-2017 model years or up to 100,000 miles.

Who is eligible?

Anyone who leased or purchased a 2012-2017 Subaru Impreza WRX or WRX STI with an EJ-series 2.5-liter turbocharged engine is eligible to get these settlement benefits. Your WRX/STI must be manufactured between October 11, 2011, and November 16, 2016, with bearing vehicle identification numbers (VIN) ending with CG203168 and up for 5-door models, and CG006225 through H9826807 for 4- door models.

What should WRX/STI owners do?

Owners can file a claim here and it must be done by May 22, 2019. You are not required to submit a claim form to receive the benefit of the 8 year/100,000 mile extended warranty. 2012-2017 WRX/STI owners are automatically eligible.

It would also be a good idea if you own a 2012-2017 Subaru WRX or STI with the EJ25 2.5-liter engine, to make an appointment with your Subaru dealer to get it checked out. Your engine may not have failed, but one way to determine if you could be having a problem is if you begin to experience a slight decrease in power which could be a sign of major issues ahead.

They do not take responsibility if the vehicle has been modified. Of course they do not tell you this when you purchase the vehicle. I think it should be mention up front from the sale of the vehicle and have a form stating so that there is no miscommunication on either party. Subaru sent me a survey after they denied my son's claim. Just today I had a voicemail from the service director for me to call him and he did not answer so I left him a message as well as an email. will see what he has to say. My survey with survey was to the point and I did not hold back on dissatisfaction of service.

Ok I called back the service director at the dealership and he will not call me back. We need to report these issues to the BBB on Subaru manufacture, report the place where the vehicle was purchased from and the Attorney General's Office in your state. In the meantime my son had the engine replaced and not even two months later the engine took a crap. So now I am fighting with the shop as they want to charge me more money WTH. Everyone needs to answer to this bullshit! I mean it post stuff on BBB and file a complaint with the ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE. I am and letting giving up and also have a lawyer that is going to look at the paperwork from the dealership and this shop.

I have a 2014 Wrx that had bearing failure at 62,000 miles. Took it to the local Subaru Dealership and they immediately ordered a new short block, new crank, pistons, piston rings, etc. They are also rebuilding the heads as there was quite a bit of metal in the oil. The only thing I am being charged for is the new clutch kit I requested be installed while the motor is out. They confirmed my car had the extended 100,000/8 Years warranty under the class action lawsuit.

Hey Josh, when they say extended 100,000/8 Years warranty. They are extending original powertrain warranty by 8 years? So it will be original 5 years warranty + 8 years of extended warranty?

Great for you but they said because my son made modifications that Subaru won’t look or pay for it. My biggest issue is that nothing that I was given stated that he could not modify the car. Change muffler and lower it all done professionally.

An aftermarket exhaust isn’t going to cause bearing failure unless potentially it was a catless exhaust system allowing for over boost causing detonation of the internals. Again that’s highly unlikely but what they may claim caused it. My cars engine was modified, I just swapped the factory parts back onto the engine and returned it to stock before taking it to Subaru. I would get into contact with an attorney and see what they think your likelihood of recovery of cost under the class action lawsuit would be.

Thanks for the information. I am actually going to file a complaint against the dealership, Subaru and the repair shop now with the Attorney general's office and the BBB. It is appalling how everyone wants to point the finger. I'm still paying on this car and had to pay more than the car is worth to fix it. Beyond livid

I must be a lucky one because I took my car to the dealership I got it from with rod knock they called my the first morning asking for maintenance records because I do everything myself and later that day or the next they called saying that they're replacing everything a complete long block. never asked for anything else. Goodluck Guys!

I had my car at stage 1.5 with access port and cold air intake I learned what to do and willing to help anyone else. But if you have already taken your car to Subaru this won't work! But if your motor goes and you do everything I did you shouldn't have any problem.

I think one should be raised for the EJ engines as well. Ringland failure in my stock 2006 Legacy GT Limited. Dealer quoted almost $10K for a new shortblock, hahaah.. But seriously , has to be enough ambulance chasers that could use this successful suit in extending it to all EJ255/EJ257 motors.

What if I just purchased a used Subaru STI and it falls in this category? The original short block had been replaced due to failure. Did they fix the problem or is this a way of saying “cross your fingers” and hope it doesn’t happen again?

Got a 2015 Subaru Wrx in 2017 used. A/C broke down in 2020 and now the engine isn’t even working properly after getting the oil cap changed out. Any advice for this situation? Should I get a new engine or just trade in my subi for a different car at this point? It’s most likely gonna be $8-10k to fix this :(

Scott (not verified)    March 14, 2021 - 7:05PM

I purchased a used 2013 WRX with 43,000 in February, put about 600 miles on it, near the end of a 35 mile drive, my motor went, I was near a dealership, I thought it was just something loose but stopped by dealership and turns out it was this. They are covering the sort block under warranty. I have been wondering if subaru has done any thing with the replacement blocks to reduce the chance of this happening again.

Curious where you live/what Dealer you went to. The one I bought mine from is in Santa Clara California...(Stevens Creek Subaru) Part of the Bhaktiari auto group. Bunch of swindlers. I hate how companies like Subaru and Tesla have such a shiny exterior but when you try to support them/fall back on their claims of quality - they try to blame the customer & deny any culpability. This is clearly an issue - and no VINs should be excluded.

We need to strike up another Class Action.

My 2017 sti engine blew up, with less than 25k miles in April 2021

They did not extend my warranty but replace most to the engine

I no longer have confident with Subaru and sold my baby

Quick tip for yall. Before you bring your wrx/sti to a dealer for the engine failure caused by rod bearings, please confirm with SOA if your car is eligible for this extended warranty. Yesterday, I had a very weird ticking or rattling noise on acceleration around 2-3k rpm. I thought my engine got rod knocking noise, but it seems to go away for now..my car is 17 sti and 100% bone stock. it only has 41k miles on it... what the freak..I had 3 cars before my 17 sti. in my honest opinion, the subaru is the most unreliable car ever ever. not the engine noise, but also I am having the squeak noise from either throw out bearing or a clutch fork whenever I press/depress a clutch pedal. lol. I called soa and a dealer about this issue. The items are not covered by a power train, but its covered by 3 years/36k miles bumper to bumper. My car has been babied since day 1. If I'd sell my sti, I won't never ever go back to Subaru again. If you have a plan to buy a sti or any subaru cars with a boxer engine, please do not buy this shit. Buying a sti is my biggest financial mistake ever.

I have a 2008 WRX hatchback back and it has a EJ25 and it blow haven't gotten it fixed cuz I dont have the resources to fix it what can I do to get it fixed I mean it falls under the same category to other EJ25 engines.

Simon (not verified)    November 3, 2023 - 1:34AM

Hi there Denis,

Thanks for the post I own a 2010 WRX hatchback and since I bought it years ago I have had nothing but issues, the biggest being the transmission and it hasn't been cheap. I'm just wondering where do I start to file a claim I have spent so much money on this car and I really think it's unfair, my mechanic simply stated to me Subaru makes garbage engines now buy a toyota or an older lexus. Well used cars are really pricey right now too so I have limited options I mean I want to sell it but really don't want to pass on a lemon to someone. Anyways any tips anyone has I would really appreciate.

Thanks
Simon
