Now All Lightly Used Subaru Cars Cost More Than New Models Except One

A new report says a used Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, Impreza, WRX, and Legacy now cost more than a new car. Check out the one Subaru model that is the exception.

New car shoppers looking for a 2022 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other new Subaru models may not find the vehicle they want on retailers’ lots due to the ongoing supply chain issues. Many Subaru retailers have a supply of one-to-two-year-old models but are they a good deal right now?

A new report from iSeeCars, and information from Julie Blackley, says all “lightly used” (one-to-two year-old model) Subaru models except one cost more used than new. iSeeCars says a “lightly used” vehicle is defined by using data from the 2020 and 2021 model year with mileage within 20 percent of the average annual mileage as defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation; around 13,000 miles per year.

The short supply of all new Subaru models is driving the cost of a one-to-two-year-old vehicle up well above the new car price. Below is the list of Subaru models and how much a low mileage 2020 and 2021 vehicles will cost now.

The in-demand Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV makes the top twelve models list that cost more used than new. A low mileage 2020 or 2021 Subaru Crosstrek will cost around (11.7 percent) or $3,524 more used than a new 2022 Crosstrek subcompact SUV.

The Subaru WRX sports car is not far behind and will cost (10.5 percent) $3,473 more used than a next-generation 2022 WRX performance sedan. The next-generation 2022 WRX performance sedans won’t arrive until this spring, and Subaru of America is running out of 2021 models, so the only option is a used model.

How much does a used Subaru Forester compact SUV, Outback midsize SUV, Ascent 3-Row SUV, Impreza compact sedan and hatchback, or Legacy sedan cost?

iSeeCars data shows the Subaru Impreza hatchback is next highest on the list with a used price of (5.45 percent) +$1,379 more used than new. The Forester is next at (4.99 percent) +$1,723, Impreza sedan is (4.67 percent) +$1,108), Subaru Outback (4.10 percent) +$1,469, and Legacy (1.03 percent) +$326).

Only one used Subaru model is priced less than a new vehicle

The Ascent 3-Row SUV family hauler is the only lightly used Subaru model priced less than a new vehicle. iSeeCars data shows a one-to-two-year-old Ascent will cost (-3.65 percent) -$1,687 less than a new 2022 model year. The difference could be because retailers have more supply of new Ascent SUVs than other Subaru models.

What is the average price of a 3-year old Subaru?

According to iSeeCars data, the average 3-year-old used car price for a Subaru Crosstrek is $23,524. The average 3-year-old used car price for a Subaru Forester is $31,934. The average 3-year-old used car price for a Subaru Outback is $34,433.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium price is $24,720, a 2022 Forester Premium is $29,320, and the 2022 Outback Premium trim is $30,270. All prices include destination and delivery fees. It’s still a better value to buy a new model than a 3-year old used Subaru model right now.

How long will the used car prices stay high?

A new report from Kelly Blue Book says prices dealers pay for the used cars they later sell have leveled off. Used car prices may have stabilized from last year’s record numbers but remain historically high.

What should new car shoppers do?

If you can wait a few months for your new model, it’s best to order the color and trim level and wait for the vehicle to be manufactured by Subaru. New Subaru prices have risen but remain lower than used car prices. You can read the complete report here.

In the crazy upside-down new and used car market, it’s best to buy a new 2022 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other models than a lightly used model. But the Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV is the one exception.

My daughter totalled her 2018 Crosstrek Premium. The insurance company paid $30,531 after $1000 deductible. Her 2022 Crosstrek Premium cost $33,348 (all taxes, registration, fees, etc). The new car has even more safety features. This article only discusses price. My daughter was run off the road into a row of trees, down a very steep ditch. When she hit the trees, the car spun 180° with so much force it blew out the windows. She had her 12 year old Chihuahua in the front seat in a harness, attached to the seat belt inside a padded carrier. They both walked away from the accident unharmed after a passerby stopped and got the crushed back door open so she could stand on the bar between the seats to crawl out.
We didn't even consider replacing the car with anything else but another Subaru.

Quite true. I recently traded my 2019 Crosstrek (14500 miles) for a new 2021 Crosstrek. I received $26,500 for my trade. I doubt I'll ever see values like that again!
