The 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness And Why It Gets No Design Upgrades

The 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness has arrived, but no new exterior upgrades exist. Here's why Subaru of America chose to leave it unchanged and the new upgrades it does come with.

The 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness arrives now at U.S. showrooms, but why doesn't it have any new exterior design upgrades? Subaru of America announced the 2023 Outback Base, Premium, new Onyx Edition with a 2.5-liter engine, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT all get new exterior upgrades.

But the 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness remains unchanged with no new design features. Subaru says the Outback Wilderness was new for the 2022 model year, was recently introduced, and doesn't need any upgrades.

All 2023 Outback trims get expanded wheel arch cladding, "adding to the vehicle's rugged new look while providing additional protection," Subaru of America said. The more rugged Outback Wilderness already comes with the extra wheel arch cladding.

The standard model also gets a redesigned front fascia and exterior cladding, a more prominent grille, redesigned LED headlights and fog lights, and a more rugged front bumper cover. But not the Wilderness.

What are the 2023 Wilderness upgrades?

The 2023 Wilderness gets the latest safety technology with the latest version of EyeSight and a new wide-angle mono camera. Subaru also updated the Wilderness multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

What is the price of the 2023 Outback Wilderness?

The 2023 Outback Wilderness gets an $800 price increase and starts at $39,670, which includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.

What is the 2023 Outback Wilderness fuel mileage?

The EPA says the 2023 Outback Wilderness gets an estimated 21/26 city/highway mpg and 23 combined mpg. The Wilderness trim drops one mpg city and combined mpg from the 2022 models due to emission regulation changes affected Outback's 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine.

We asked Subaru about the lower fuel mileage ratings, and their reply is here. "There are a few reasons, including power consumption due to enhanced features and emission regulation changes.”

What type of fuel does the Outback Wilderness require?

With fuel prices rising, do you need the more expensive grade of gasoline for the 2023 Wilderness? All Outback trim levels with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine are designed to run on 87 octane or regular gasoline, and you don't need expensive premium fuel.

Is the 2023 Outback Wilderness a good value?

The Outback Wilderness trim still comes in at under $40,000, and it's a good choice for those with active lifestyles who want to get further off the grid.

Which is best, the Outback or Forester Wilderness?

Besides cost and fuel mileage, the 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the clear winner over the 2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness.

The Outback has additional ground clearance over the Forester (9.5-inches vs. 9.2-inches), more horsepower power and torque (260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque vs. 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque), and additional towing capacity (3,500 lbs. vs. 3,000 lbs). The 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the more capable model to handle extreme off-road terrain.

When will the Subaru Outback Wilderness trim level get new exterior and interior upgrades? The 2024 model will likely remain the same, and we won't see new styling upgrades until the complete model change for the 2025 Subaru Outback Wilderness. Stay tuned.
