Tesla Building a $3.5 Billion Semi Factory

The Governor of Nevada, Joe Lombardo, has just announced in his State of the Union address tonight that he will be joining Elon Musk and the team at Tesla tomorrow to unveil the plans for an advanced factory to build the Tesla Semi in Northern Nevada.

Tesla has just announced this factory on their blog. The key highlight from their blog post:

"We will be investing over $3.6 billion more to continue growing Gigafactory Nevada, adding 3,000 new team members and two new factories: a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory (with capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million light duty vehicles annually), as well as our first high-volume Semi factory. Semi is our fully electric combination truck, with 500 miles of range and energy consumption of less than 2 KWh per mile.

Thank you to the Tesla team, our supply chain partners and the local community that has made accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy possible at Gigafactory Nevada."

Currently, the Tesla Semi has been delivered to PepsiCo and in a limited quantity. With this factory, the reach of the Tesla Semi is about to change. During his address, Lombardo said that he was looking forward to joining Elon Musk and Tesla's team.

Many questions are being asked as this is very recent news. Will this be in addition to their plant in Sparks, Nevada, or will it be a separate facility.

What Will the Factory Do?

The factory will most likely focus solely on the Tesla Semi and the batteries needed to power it. How much production will this factory be expected to produce? I expect we'll hear about this tomorrow.

The Tesla Semi has shown to have some staggering economics and if it can be mass-produced, will certainly make a dent in emissions and be good for the environment - as well as economically viable.

Recently, on November 25, 2022, a test drive was done with the Tesla Semi where it drove 500 miles on a single charge. It was carrying a load of 82,000 pounds as well at the time and finished with around 4% state of charge.

This is revolutionary in the trucking industry, and especially for an EV semi truck. No other electric semi has made it 500 miles on a single charge. I expect to see the Tesla Semi get more range over time as batteries improve as well.

I see Tesla eventually producing about 250,000 Tesla Semi vehicles per year in this facility.
