No 2015 Subaru WRX STIs are available if you want one now

If you want a 2015 Subaru WRX or WRX STI be prepared to wait. Dealers can’t keep up with the demand. How long is the wait?

If you want a new-generation 2015 Subaru WRX or WRX STI performance car you better be prepared to wait for awhile. It will require you putting your name on a list and waiting for the next spot to come up if you want one. And you can’t even find one to take for a test drive or sit in. The dealers don’t even have a demo sitting on their lot. We found out the cars are harder to get hold of than a $2 bill.

Be prepared to wait

We went to a high volume Denver area Subaru dealer to see what would happen if we wanted to buy a new 2015 Subaru WRX or WRX STI. We were told we could put our name on a waiting list and that would just give us the right to hold a place in line until the next available order spot came up. There were already 5 buyers ahead of us waiting for the right to order the four-door performance sedan.

The cars are sold before they arrive on the lot

This Subaru dealer told us all dealers get a certain allocation depending on dealer volume and they can only order so many per month. Even if they have 100 buyers with money in hand, this particular Denver area dealer could only get 8 of the cars total each month. The salesman at this dealer told us he could sell 10-15 cars a month if they had them available. They are allocated 8 WRX and WRX STI’s per month and they are pre sold before they ever arrive on the lot.

This dealer has never seen it so tough to get a new WRX or WRX STI even back in 2008 when the third generation performance cars came on the scene. There is more interest in the performance sedan now which is similar to when the WRX arrived on U.S. shores for the very first time as a 2002 model. That car came with a 227 hp 2.0-liter turbo engine and rally-bred drivetrain. And once you get your order confirmed with Subaru, it will take 3-4 months for your car to arrive.

WRX and WRX STI demand equal

This dealer said the demand for the WRX is about equal to the WRX STI and that they are selling an equal number. He also told us that the Subaru dealership has not placed one order for a WRX with a CVT automatic transmission. All the orders have been for the new 6-speed standard gearbox.

So if you want a new-generation 2015 Subaru WRX or WRX STI, be prepared to put your name on a waiting list. This will give you the right to secure your place in line so that when there is a spot available, you will be next to be able to place an order. The good news is that you can order the car you want with the options and features you are looking for. The bad news is that once you finally get your car ordered it will be a 3-4 month wait to have your performance car made and shipped from Japan. Good things come to those who have patience and can wait.
