We get a glimpse of Subaru's future all-electric program from the lineup at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Subaru's mystery SUV at the Tokyo Auto Salon turned out to be a Solterra STI concept vehicle. Is a 2023 Subaru Solterra STI high-performance EV a possibility for U.S. customers?
The Solterra STI all-electric concept is based on the 2023 Solterra all-electric SUV, making its U.S. launch in mid-2022. The Solterra STI is a concept model and features a roof spoiler, cherry-red under spoilers, and other aerodynamic upgrades on its exterior. Subaru says the model inspires Subaru's superior driving dynamics.
Subaru and Subaru Tecnica International (Subaru's performance partner) showcased their models at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The Solterra STI all-electric concept uses customized parts by STI. Subaru says, "Even if it is an all-electric SUV, it is a concept model to be exhibited as a sporty model from Subaru and STI."
Subaru Corporation and STI also unveiled its STI E-RA (Electric-Record Attempt) concept performance car with 1073 horsepower at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Will Subaru offer a Solterra STI production model?
Subaru offers STI parts for its customers in Japan, but they are not much more than window dressing. While Subaru likes to bring STI concepts to the show, a good example is the Forester STI that never made it to production. There are no performance upgrades under the hood of the Solterra STI that make it an authentic STI.
Subaru will appeal to a larger audience if it sticks to its core values of all-wheel-drive, fun-to-drive, off-road capability, affordability, and safety. The same will be valid for the global Solterra all-electric compact SUV. An all-electric Solterra STI will not make it to production.
The 2023 Subaru Solterra all-electric compact SUV arrives this year on U.S. soil. It will appeal to the majority of Subaru's loyal followers who want more range, not more power in their EV. The Subaru Solterra all-electric STI concept reveals what is possible, but it's for show and not go.
