J.D. Power Says Subaru Is Low In APEAL But Still Outscores Toyota And Honda

The 2022 J.D. Power APEAL study says Subaru customers aren't wowed by the 2022 Outback, 2022 Crosstrek, or 2022 Forester. Check out the new study findings.

Even though the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, 2022 Subaru Forester, and 2022 Subaru Outback are among the fastest-selling new vehicles this year, no Subaru models won their segment again as the most appealing in the new 2022 J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) study. The APEAL study measures owners' emotional attachment to their new vehicle in the first 90 days. Like the recent 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, Subaru scores below average.

In the new J.D. Power 2022 APEAL study, Subaru scores well below the mainstream (non-luxury) brand segment average of 841 with a score of 833. Subaru scored in the bottom four of all mainstream automakers in the 2022 study. Only Toyota (831), Chrysler (829), and Honda (824) scored lower than Subaru.

No Subaru models won their segment as most appealing in the new study. In the SUV segments, the 2022 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, 2022 Crosstrek, and 2022 Ascent SUVs are not creating enough excitement, passion, or wowing owners to make the list of the top vehicles, according to J.D. Power.

J.D. Power highest ranked luxury and mainstream brands

Power says Porsche (888) ranks highest among the luxury brands, and Dodge ranks highest among mainstream brands with a score of 882. Ram (863) ranks second, and GMC (856) ranks third among mainstream brands.

What does the APEAL study mean for customers?

The 2022 J.D. Power APEAL study is based on responses from 84,165 owners of new 2022 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study was fielded from February 2022 through May 2022, based on vehicles registered from November 2021 through February 2022.

Subaru has historically scored low in the J.D. Power APEAL study. Subaru is selling the 2022 Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester as fast as they can get them to Subaru of America retailers. They are still giving customers the safest, all-weather, and all-terrain capable, dependable, and fuel-efficient SUVs.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the hottest new vehicle for Subaru of America, and it's flying off retailers' lots in 2022. In a recent iSeeCars study, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek was the hottest and fastest-selling vehicle in the U.S. in June. The 2022 Subaru Forester is the third fastest-selling vehicle, and the 2022 Subaru Outback is the eleventh fastest-selling new vehicle in America.

In the first 90 days of owning Subaru models like the 2022 Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester, customers aren't wowed by the key passion points J.D. Power says are the most important that drive customer satisfaction. Subaru's core values are safety, all-wheel-drive, fun-to-drive, and all-weather and all-terrain performance. It's a formula that seems to be working for the Japanese automaker.
