It’s Now Incredibly Difficult To Find A New Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek

Are you shopping for a 2021 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, or 2021 Crosstrek? See why it's challenging to find one to buy now.

Subaru of America is running out of 2021 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, and 2021 Crosstrek SUVs to sell to its customers. According to a new report from Automotive News, Subaru has the shortest supply of new cars of any automaker in America with a six-day supply. It's due to the global pandemic and microchip shortage.

It's getting hard for Subaru retailers to keep new models on their lots. On July 1, Subaru had an eight-day supply of cars, and on August 1, they only have a six-day supply. New car inventory is dwindling, and there's nothing retailers can do but wait. Marketing Director at W&L Subaru Meghan Balum told The Daily Item, "The Subaru shortage is "starting to normalize" with what she hopes will be standard inventory within 60 days.

The Subaru six-day inventory includes vehicles in transit from the Japan factory where they make the 2021 Forester and Crosstrek and the U.S. factory in Lafayette, Indiana, where they manufacture the 2022 Outback and Ascent. Balum said, "We have cars coming in all the time, but a lot of them are already sold."

Subaru customers wanting a 2021 Forester, 2022 Outback, or 2021 Crosstrek can order the color and trim level they want but may have to wait 60 days or longer for their new model to arrive.

A source close to Subaru told Subaru Report last week, he sold more used cars last month for the first time. He said two-thirds were used cars, and only one-third were new Subaru vehicles.

"In the U.S., car demand has been robust on the back of economic recovery, and our sales have been robust as well," Subaru CFO Katsuyuki Mizuma said last week while announcing financial results. "We think we could have sold more if there had been more in our inventory."

The microchip shortage is also affecting new model launches. The newly-refreshed 2022 Subaru Forester and 2022 Subaru Crosstrek should have arrived in the U.S. this summer, but Subaru of America has not even announced the two new models.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ was announced, and the next-generation sports coupe may not arrive in the U.S. until late this year. The all-new 2022 Subaru WRX global debut was delayed because the New York International Auto Show was canceled.

It's incredibly difficult for customers wanting a 2021 Subaru Forester, 2022 Subaru Outback, 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, or other new Subaru model this summer. Subaru has the tightest supply of any automaker in the U.S., and things may not improve until 2022. Stay tuned.

That's why I bought a Legacy Touring XT in June. Easier to find and they actually would deal on them. Sedans in general are just easier to find.

The shortage will change once the battery fiasco Subaru is hiding, becomes national news. Blaming Subarus design errors on owners is despicable.

All the dealers near me are still overstocked on Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek. Still offering 0% APR too!

I leased a 2022 Subaru Outback XT in early August. Took 4 days to get it. This shortage news is all hype...l live close to two Subaru dealers and their lots are full.
