Four new alternatives to the MazdaSpeed3
It’s been almost three years since the MazdaSpeed3 was for sale as a new car. The clock continues to tick for those who love the car. First generation cars are now between six and nine years old. Gen-2 cars are now about three to five years old. Everyone hopes that recent reports of a new MazdaSpeed3 generation being in the works are true, but the reality is for many MazdaSpeed3 owners and fans an alternative might be worth considering. Here is a list of some current models for sale new now that a MazdaSpeed3 fan might find worth considering – until a new model is revealed.
2015 Ford Focus ST
The Focus ST is loved by those that actually drive the car. What the Focus ST offers a MazdaSpeed3 fan is a familiar layout, front drive with big turbo power, and a strong hoon factor. The Focus ST’s 252 hp from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is more than enough to get the blood pumping. If there are drawbacks, it may be the cost of repairs such as the reports of front headlight assemblies costing thousands.
2015 Volkswagen GTI
Let’s face it. Some of us MazdaSpeed3 fans have grown up a little. Our needs may have changed. The VW is a front-engine, turbocharged car available with a manual transmission that can satisfy weekend back-roads blasts, but is also a “grown-up” sleeper that doesn’t attract a lot of unwanted attention. Power is a little low at only 210 to 220 hp, but the torque curve is nice. If money is not a concern, consider the Type R, which has almost 300 hp and AWD.
2015, 2016 Subaru WRX
Ok, it is heresy, but the WRX offers a lot of bang for the buck, which is most of what made the MazdaSpeed3 turn heads. The WRX is now so refined it is hard to argue it is not a fast car that can be breathed on a bit to be even faster. The STI is nice, but the value equation isn’t as favorable. One downside, the hatchback body is gone for 2015/2016.
2015 Mustang 2.3-liter Ecoboost
A Mustang and MazdaSpeed3 are apples and oranges, right? Maybe not. 2.3-liter turbo, bad attitude, affordable price. Hmm, sounds familiar. The Mustang is affordable starting in the $27K neighborhood, has rear wheel drive, and you can get a manual. What’s not love?
