Most of the Ram brand's 20 inch "chrome" wheels are actually a chrome cover on an aluminum wheel...at least they were in the mid 2000s. i imagine that some application of high strength steel could be lighter and stronger...
Perfect example. One can chrome over steel as easily as aluminum. Most of the gunmetal sort of grayish rims like the ones on my IS are actually painted just like the body. Primer, color coats, clear coat. I know because I had to repair one. 3 Body shops and Lexus also all suggested nail polish. It worked great!

Our van has painted aluminum wheels. They are literally the only wheels you can get for it and are painted to match the body coating.
