Diesel and 2022 Toyota Tundra? Fans Shocked by Curious Toyota USA Diesel Video

I have been covering Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs since 2005. In that time, I have probably been asked at least one hundred times about diesel engines.

Many Toyota fans would love to see a diesel engine make its way under the hood of many popular models.

Especially Toyota Tundra.

My friend came to me yesterday asking about diesel engines and the 2022 Toyota Tundra. He wanted to know if there was a chance Toyota could surprise us with a next-gen Tundra diesel option.

You see, Toyota USA posted a video on their YouTube channel last week on how diesel engines work. The video taught us how a diesel engine differs from a traditional gasoline engine. And it showed us the benefits of diesel.

This was odd to my friend, and it is peculiar to me as well. Especially since Toyota does not offer a diesel engine in any of their vehicles here in this country.

I see this as certainly interesting timing.

2022 Tundra and Diesel

The timing is noteworthy because next-gen 2022 Tundra is set to launch this fall. New Tundra trucks should start arriving at local dealerships by the end of this year.

Yet, we still have no official performance specifications and details.

And then there is this “Diesel 101” video that popped up out of nowhere by Toyota USA.

I see a surprise Toyota Tundra announcement by Toyota any day now. Right?

Benefits of Diesel Engines

There are Toyota Tundra owners and fans who would be able to benefit from the advantages a diesel engine brings.

Fuel economy is typically great with diesel. Torque numbers are higher. Higher torque equates to higher towing capacities.

Matching these diesel benefits with the latest 2022 Toyota Tundra makes sense on many levels to many potential Tundra owners.

So, it will happen for sure, right?

Fans Speak out on Tundra diesel

As you can imagine, fans reacted to the diesel engine video rather strongly with many emotions.
Just take a look.

“OMG WHY IS TOYOTA POSTING THIS?!? Toyota is playing with our emotions.” Added ‘I’m Not Using My Real Name.’

Dfestus commented. “Bring diesel to the USA and you will sell all you can make. I love my diesel chevy colorado and diesel VW golf. Great cars but not Toyota great.”

“Diesel = that which is unavailable from Toyota in the US.” Said Da Evolution.

“You giving us the diesel? Or just playing?” Asked Rommel.

Marc wondered. “Does this mean the Tacoma, 4Runner or Tundra is going to be getting a diesel???”

“Diesel for the 2022 Tundra? Watch there will be one.” Commented GMPartsGuy.

Dillon speculated. “I have a feeling that this is hinting towards the DIESEL TUNDRA and DIESEL HD :)”

“Hmm. Why is Toyota USA releasing this video? Are you going to offer a diesel Tundra in North America?” Dropped D. Ryan.

“Toyota USA have a video about diesel? Tundra with diesel engine is coming guys. Hang tight.” Prophesized truongtu0191.

“Is this hint towards the DIESEL TUNDRA?” Questioned McNozo.

Brad has a guess. “Diesel Tundra???? Twin Turbo V6 Diesel????”

As you can see, the people are asking for diesel. The people want diesel. The people do not know what to think about this diesel video.

Toyota Tundra and diesel…coming soon?

Not So Fast, Toyota Tundra

Just as I have been letting customers down with the bad news since 2005, I would not plan on seeing a diesel engine in 2022 Tundra.

I just do not see a diesel engine coming to America (yes, I just made an Eddie Murphy movie reference) in the near future.

This does not mesh with the aggressive Toyota initiative toward hybrids and battery electric vehicles. Toyota plans on selling up to 70% of its vehicles as hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles by 2030.

I just do not see diesel in Toyota Tundra future.

Time for your Toyota Tundra comments

This was probably just a weird coincidence by Toyota USA. A well-intentioned video (that was very well done, by the way) designed to teach people about diesel engine anatomy and technology.

Of course, I could be wrong and maybe Toyota does plan on giving 2022 Toyota Tundra fans the shock of their lives.

Diesel baby.

This would surprise virtually everyone.
