Tesla Offering Unlock of Model Y RWD Range

Tesla is offering an unlock of the Model Y RWD if you purchased one over the last several months. Depending on which batteries you have, and pending regulatory approval, you can unlock 40 to 60 miles of range for $1,500 to $2,000. That's not too bad for those who want a bit more range than what they currently have.

This unlock comes at a time that Tesla has recently added a new Model Y to their website that is replacing the old RWD version. The new RWD now starts at 320 miles of range, up from 260 miles of range. That's a massive increase. However, it appears that this Model Y does not use LFP batteries - meaning 100% regular charging isn't recommended, but it does mean it qualifies for the $7,500 U.S. tax credit.

This is great value for Tesla to be doing and will certainly help increase Tesla's margins on their vehicles. RWD vehicles are efficient and much cheaper to make, due to only have one single motor in the car.

It's uncertain when there will be a Model 3 RWD long range, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it soon, as well as an upgrade to the Model 3 long range battery so that both vehicles can qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit.

It may be the end of LFP batteries in Tesla vehicles for the time being in order to have all their vehicles qualify for the U.S. $7,500 EV tax credit.

Say Goodbye to LFP Batteries

Tesla might be saying goodbye to LFP batteries for the time being - that is, until Tesla can produce them directly in the U.S., or the battery chemistry becomes so good that Tesla can't afford to not use them.

Until that time happens, I expect Tesla to replace all their vehicles that use LFP batteries with U.S. batteries - or a battery chemistry that allows them to take advantage of the $7,500 U.S. tax credit.

It's a smart move from Tesla to do this. $7,500 off Tesla vehicles means much more affordable vehicles that will sell more.

Many who hate that Tesla keeps cutting prices are going to like this move by Tesla, making a much better vehicle with range that will help ease those who have range anxiety.

When you factor in the EV tax credit, you get a vehicle for under $38,000. That's not too bad at all!

Now this is something I will have to think about getting!
