Subaru Resumes Production Of New Forester And Crosstrek, Expect Delays If You Want One

Subaru has resumed production at its Gunma, Japan plant. See how the recent shutdown will affect the new 2020 Forester and Crosstrek inventory in the U.S.

Torque News reported on October 18, the Subaru plant closure in Gunma Japan was due to a typhoon that hit Japan last week. The good news is, Subaru Corporation announced the plant has now resumed production of the new 2020 Forester SUV, Crosstrek compact SUV, sport-tuned WRX, performance-tuned WRX STI, and BRZ sports coupe.

The typhoon did not hit the plant but affected some of the Japanese automaker’s key suppliers. The plant was shut down on October 16 and reopened Friday, October 25 according to an announcement from Subaru. The main plant and Yajima plant are finished vehicle plants, and the Oizumi plant is an engine and transmission plant. The impact on the company's consolidated financial results is currently under scrutiny.

The bad news is, the plant shut down could have an immediate impact on U.S. customers who could see delays on shipments of the 2020 Subaru Forester, 2020 Crosstrek, 2020 WRX and WRX STI, and BRZ sports coupe. The 2020 Subaru Outback SUV/Crossover, 2020 Ascent family hauler, 2020 Impreza compact sedan and 5-Door, and 2020 Legacy sedan are all made in the U.S. and will not be affected.

Subaru was already in short supply of Forester and many Crosstrek models because of the model change from 2019 models year vehicles to the new 2020 models. Customers who are waiting for the new models will see some delays in October and into November.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek

Torque News spoke with a larger Subaru dealer near Denver, Colorado and they told us they have an “acceptable” inventory of new 2020 Forester models, and the Subaru Crosstrek inventory is dwindling as the 2020 models have not arrived yet, and 2019 models are almost gone.

Subaru produces around 2500 vehicles per day at the main Gunma plant with a possible loss of 11,250 units because of the shutdown. If you can find a new 2020 Forester, Subaru has special offers with 2.9 percent financing or leasing offers of $279 per month through October 31, 2019. Torque News could not find any special offers on 2020 Subaru Crosstrek models.
