Subaru of America issued a recall for the recently-upgraded 2023 Subaru Ascent 3-Row family hauler. Customers who own the new Ascent could experience a sudden loss of tire pressure, increasing the risk of a crash, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA revealed certain 2023 Ascent SUVs equipped with 20-inch wheels might be equipped with tires that were damaged during the wheel mounting and assembly process. The number of potentially affected Ascent vehicles is 4,409.

Which Subaru Ascent vehicles are included?

The 20-inch tires come standard on the 2023 Ascent Onyx Edition, Limited, Onyx Edition Limited, and Touring trim levels. The NHTSA says the affected Ascent SUV models with 20-inch wheels may be equipped with tires that had the internal bead damaged during the wheel mounting and assembly process.

The 2023 Ascent vehicles not included in this recall are equipped with adequately mounted tire and wheel assemblies or are fitted with 18-inch wheels.

Description of the defect

2023 Subaru Ascent recall

Subaru says a misaligned bead guide arm on the tire mounting equipment may have caused excessive stress on the tire bead during mounting, possibly causing damage to the internal structure of the tire. Internal damage to the tire bead may lead to structural failure of the tire and rapid tire deflation, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Remedy

For all potentially affected Ascent vehicles with 20-inch wheels, Subaru dealers will remove and replace all four tires with new ones. The replacement tires are new tires that have not been damaged while mounting on the wheel. All removed and defective tires will be rendered unusable and disposed of according to local regulations.

What should 2023 Ascent customers know?

Subaru dealers will replace all four tires free of charge.

Subaru of America will mail 2023 Subaru Ascent owners notification letters. The letters are expected to be sent on June 6, 2023. In addition, owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRH-23. Customers can check their VIN at Subaru's recall website here.

2023 Subaru Ascent owners may also contact the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
