The Hot Used Subaru Models Now And Ones That Will Leave You Out In The Cold

Which used Subaru models are hot now? Some used models are easy to find, and others you will be searching for longer. Check out the used Subaru report here.

With new Subaru car prices and higher interest rates, buying a new car this year is more challenging. So, a lightly used model will do well if you can find one. However, Subaru's all-wheel-drive vehicles are in demand, and not all of the Japanese automakers' used cars are easy to find, while others are more plentiful.

Here's a quick guide to help determine which model to buy now. And the ones you may want to avoid altogether because demand is high and prices are up. The charts and information below is supplied by EpicVin data. Next, we will explain what it means for used Subaru model shoppers now.

Used Subaru Outback

All of this data concerns only used cars being put up for sale, and to avoid confusion, new vehicles are not considered in this article. So please keep reading for the conclusion and what it means for used Subaru shoppers this year.

The chart below shows how many used Subaru Outbacks, Foresters, Crosstreks, and other models were sold concerning all Subaru cars sold in 2022. So the total number of Subaru vehicles sold in 2022 is 100%; out of the 100%, the number of Outbacks sold was 24.92%, Foresters made up 21.78%, and so forth.

Used Subaru models

As you can see, the Subaru Outback is the most sought-after used Subaru model and is in the most demand. The Forester is the second most in-demand model, and Crosstrek is the third most sought-after used SUV. These models will take longer for buyers to find and sell at a premium price.

The next chart shows how many cars of each model were sold. So, 281,082 Subaru Outback midsize SUVs were presented on the used cars market, of which 244,458 were sold. So, 86.97% of the Subaru Outbacks offered for sale sold. And the same for each model.

You don't need to avoid these three used Subaru models, but with higher demand comes higher prices, and they will be harder to find. There is the most competition for Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek, and the dealers know it and will charge a premium price for a lightly used low mileage model.

Three used Subaru models hit the sweet spot for used car shoppers

The Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV and Subaru Legacy midsize sedan hit the sweet spot and will be among the best, most plentiful used Subaru models to find at an affordable price. The Subaru Impreza compact sedan and hatchback will be the next best used model for shoppers this year.

All three models also offer standard all-wheel-drive, with all-weather performance, have the top safety scores, are reliable, and will retain their value when it's time to trade the vehicle in on a newer model.

The EpicVin data reveals that buying a good used Subaru Outback, Forester, or Crosstrek will require more searching, and you'll pay a premium price for the cleanest low mileage models. On the other hand, a Subaru Ascent, Legacy, or Impreza will be a better buy for used Subaru shoppers.

This article has some pretty serious flaws. I did a cursory read of both this article, and the one it links to that explains the reports from Consumer Reports.

The Ascent is the worst Subaru available. Full stop. It's still teething, and should be expected to have issues. Period.

It then categorizes the Crosstrek separately from the Impreza, which use the same platform, powertrain, interior bits etc. It's basically an Impreza with higher springs and body cladding.

How could the Crosstrek be such a great car if changing the suspension and the exterior make such a difference? The answer is it doesn't, and it isn't

The most reliable Subaru available? Anything running on a proven platform and powertrain; at Subaru, that's pretty much all of their offerings.

According to Subaru of Americas numbers, The Crosstrek was the best selling Subaru in the USA for 2022, at 155,142 units, The Outback came in second at 147,262. Third place goes to the Forester at 114,096 units.
