Why Is the Toyota Tacoma the Most Ticketed Truck?

On a list led by a Lexus, the Tacoma owners hold their own.

Toyota Tacoma drivers may not be hooning around like those wacky Lexus ES 300 sedan owners, but they do earn their share of attention from the law. According to Insurance.com, the Toyota Tacoma is number ten on the top ten most ticketed vehicles. This according to the results of an updated survey the company conducts each year.

The Tacoma is also the only truck in the top 20 most ticketed vehicles. Its 30% of owners having reported getting a ticket tops the Chevy Colorado’s 23.5%, and Ford F-150’s 23.1%. The average for all cars is 21%. You may think that sports cars would be ticketed the most, but only 17% of Chevrolet Corvette owners and 25.7% of Mustang GT owners reported getting a ticket. Last year’s top vehicle for tickets was the Subaru WRX, but this year its 30% drops it down to a tie for tenth.

Insurance.com asks its customers how many were “recently ticketed.” In addition, it reviews accident reports and traffic violation reports of its customers. It then compiles the data to get its list. This past list was created after the company analyzed over 323,000 customers' files. “It’s the driver that gets tickets, not the car,” says Penny Gusner, consumer analyst for Insurance.com. “But it is interesting to see what vehicle makes and models attract drivers who are prone to traffic violations.”

The front-drive Lexus ES 300 sedan being at the top was a surprise. This sedan was much like a Toyota Camry V6 during its production run and not really that sporty. Oddly, its owners were ten times more likely to ticketed than Lexus IS 350 owners. The IS 350 is a much more powerful rear-drive sports sedan.
