ChargePoint Announces Pay-As-You-Go Billing

A new program offered by ChargePoint promises simpler billing.

ChargePoint, the world’s largest EV network provider, has announced that it will soon offer pay-as-you-go charging. The best news to users is that there will be no change to how you see your charging activity in the app. So, you can still just drive up, activate your ChargePoint App, and the handle will be released for you to use and initiate charging.

The new billing will be an option to pay as you go instead of carrying a balance on your account. ChargePoint said in a communication to its app user that drivers had asked for a simpler approach to billing and that this new billing option is in response to user requests.

The new billing option may not yet be available in your area. ChargePoint says that it will be rolling out this new billing option over the summer. Once it does become available here is how you can activate it;
Step One - Open your ChargePoint App - Sign in if you need to.
Step Two - In the upper left corner of the screen, tap the drop-down menu that appears as three horizontal lines.
Step Three - Click Account
Step Four - Click Payment

If you the pay-as-you-go option is ready for use on your account, you’ll be shown the option to choose the pay-as-you-go model. You can begin to use the new pay-as-you-go payment type on the first of the following month after you make the change. Should you switch from auto-reload to pay-as-you-go, any remaining balance you have on your account will be applied before you start to pay your fee after each charge. In other words, ChargePoint will use up the balance on your account and then start to bill you as you go.

ChargePoint stations are independently owned, and the individual station owners set the price to use their stations. As always, you can use the app to check pricing or filter for stations that are free to use before you set out, or before you pull up to a station if you are already out and about.

If this new payment option is one you plan to use, please tell us in the comments below.

I'm frankly upset by the new billing method...and it wasn't offered as an "option". I found myself forced into the new billing with no warning at all and no "option" to opt out. I actually LIKED getting charged a lump sum every so often rather than having to deal with multiple small and repeated transactions.
