The Chevrolet Equinox is a popular five-passenger crossover. How popular? It is Chevy’s second-best-selling vehicle and it is running neck and neck with the Honda CR-V in deliveries this year. The Equinox is GM’s most popular family vehicle overall. A test of the RS AWD trim this week confirmed in our minds why this vehicle is so popular.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - What Is It?
The Equinox is a five-passenger crossover. It competes with the RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - What Powers It? How’s Its Fuel Economy?
The Equinox has a 1.5-liter, turbocharged engine coupled to a geared automatic transmission. The Equinox RS AWD earns a 27 MPG EPA-estimated fuel economy rating. In our testing, it did a bit better.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - How Is the Drive?
The Equinox delivers a comfortable ride in all circumstances. It has decent off-the-line torque and enough power to make it feel “normal” in all situations. It’s not a quick crossover. On the highway, there is a bit more road and wind noise than in some of the top-selling crossovers in the segment, but it is not as loud as the Subaru Forester to our ears.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - Interior and Infotainment
Inside, the Equinox is perfectly executed. The controls are exactly how they “should be” and learning to operate this crossover is very simple. We found the interior to be middle of the road for the segment. The CX-5 is much better in terms of style and the Forester is a bit snazzier as well. However, the Equinox has a much better infotainment system than either. Its wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make a big difference in day-to-day use. The audio system was very good. Our tester had no moonroof. Which was perfectly OK with us, but many shoppers expect it.

Notable features our RS included were a compact spare tire, a power driver’s seat, a heated steering wheel, and heated seats.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - What Does It Cost? What’s Its Value?
The 2022 Equinox RS AWD we tested had a price including a destination charge of $36,515. This is before any dealer markups, of course. The warranty is average and there is no included maintenance. We find this to be a bit more than we’d expect for what was included. However, in today's world of markups and inflation, if you can find one for MSRP it may well be the best deal you will find.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS AWD - Conclusion

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox delivers a good ride, good power, a great infotainment system, and a few features very important to us. If you are shopping for a five-passenger crossover, be sure to add it to your search list.
