Earlier this month, we learned that the 5.0L V8 in the 2018 Ford Mustang GT will pack 460 horsepower and 420lb-ft of torque, which when paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission will help propel the new pony car from a stop to 60 miles per hour in “less than 4 seconds”. We don’t know the exact 0-60, but even at 3.9 seconds, it is mighty impressive.
Last week, we learned that the base pricing for the 2018 Ford Mustang GT is higher, so buyers will be paying for that extra power, but just how much will it cost to drive away with a new Mustang that will hit 60 in less than 4 seconds?
Today, we look at the pricing for the 460 horsepower Ford Mustang, and how little money you can spend to drive away with the 2018 V8 Mustang.
Building the 2018 Mustang GT
When Ford Motor Company announced that the 2018 Mustang GT would run from 0-60mph in under 4 seconds, they pointed out that to achieve this, the new pony car was fitted with the 10-speed automatic transmission and the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires of the Performance Package. Also, the car needs to be set to Drag Mode, which requires the adjustable Drive Mode system, which is part of the 301A popular equipment group.
So, if we start with the “base” (non-Premium) 2018 Ford Mustang GT, it has an MSRP with destination of $35,995 while the 301A equipment group adds $2,000. Adding the 10-speed automatic transmission adds $1,595 to the bottom line (the 2017 Mustang GT 6-speed automatic transmission was $1,195) while the 2018 GT Performance Package adds $3,995 (up from $2,995), so with just those two options and the 301A popular equipment group, the 2018 Mustang GT price sits at $43,585. Based on the information available, that should be the minimum amount spent to buy the new Mustang which will hit 60mph in less than 4 seconds.
For comparison, the 2017 Ford Mustang GT with the GT Performance Package has an MSRP of $37,090, but that includes the 6-speed manual transmission because this year, the GT Performance Package is not available with the automatic transmission. That changes for 2018, as Ford rolls out their new high performance 10-speed automatic gearbox.
Now, that price of $43,585 will get you into a 2018 Ford Mustang GT which will hit 60 in less than 4 seconds, but there are a few other goodies which I would consider must-have items for the new pony car. The new Active Valve Performance Exhaust (new for 2018) system costs $895 and the MagneRide suspension setup which was introduced for the current Shelby GT350 Mustang (also new for 2018 for the GT) costs $1,695, and those are two items which I would most certainly order for a 2018 Mustang GT. When you add those items, the price rises to $46,175
Building the 2018 Mustang GT Premium
If you want a 2018 Ford Mustang GT which will hit 60 in less than 4 seconds while offering more premium interior bits, the Mustang GT Premium Fastback starts at $39,995. The prices for the options on the Premium model are the same as they are for the “base” Mustang GT, so $1,595 for the automatic transmission, $3,995 for the GT Performance Package, $895 for the active exhaust and $1,695 for the MagneRide suspension lead to a purchase price of $48,175.
However, if you were curious just how high the price of the 2018 Ford Mustang GT Premium Fastback can climb, if you add Orange Fury exterior paint ($495), the 401A popular equipment group, the Enhanced Security Package ($395), the Recaro front seats ($1,595) and the Shaker Pro Audio Package ($895), the MSRP rises to $53,755. A comparably equipped 2017 Ford Mustang GT Premium Fastback with similar upgrade packages and options costs around $47,000, but keep in mind that you cannot get the automatic transmission with the 2017 GT Performance Package, nor can you add the MagneRide suspension setup or the active exhaust system, so while the new Mustang GT costs quite a bit more – it offers better performance in every measure.
