2015 Ford Mustang to be Revealed in December, Public Introduction Set for Detroit 2014

Since the world found out that the 2015 Ford Mustang would usher in the next generation of the legendary pony car 50 years after the original Mustang was introduced, it was expected that the 2015 Mustang would debut at the New York Auto Show but a new report suggests that the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit will play home to the formal debut.

The original 1964 Ford Mustang was introduced on April 17th 1964 at the New York World’s Fair and with the 2014 New York International Auto Show set to begin on the week of April 17th 2014, it was widely believed that Ford would introduce the 2015 Ford Mustang in New York exactly 50 years after the first Mustang met the world. Not only does the 2015 Mustang introduced the next generation of the fabled Ford performance car but it will also serve to help celebrate the Mustang’s 50th anniversary so introducing the 2015 model in the same city and on the same day 50 years later would seem incredibly fitting.

However, a new Reuters report indicates that the 2015 Ford Mustang will show its face at a formal event in December and while it is unclear what type of event that will be – we can expect it to be something very special considering the importance of the new Mustang. Having been to the debut of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette at an event dedicated strictly to the new Vette, I would expect the Mustang to make its debut at a similar event but nothing is known about this supposed December debut.

After the 2015 Ford Mustang makes its grand debut in December, the new Mustang will make its big public debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit’s Cobo Hall. Should this be true, it will come as a big surprise that Ford picked Detroit over New York but when you consider the Detroit routes of the Mustang and the fact that Ford likely wants to begin marketing the new Mustang well before the New York show in April, Detroit may have been the preferred choice of the beancounters. A Detroit debut might be a bit less romantic than the debut on the exact day that the car was reveal 50 years early but from a business standpoint, the earlier debut of the 2015 Mustang could allow Ford to get the new pony car to market a few months sooner.

The good news for those planning to see something special in New York, Ford Motor Company reportedly has something special in store for show-goers in the Big Apple. If the 2015 Mustang does debut in Detroit in January, I would expect to see a huge Mustang-centric display at the New York show to make the Mustang and its 50th anniversary the key attraction at the 2014 NY Auto Show.
