Buyer Beware: The One 2022 Tundra Trim Level to Look Out For

A closer look at the 2022 Toyota Tundra grade you need to know more about – before you buy.

I have been very interested in the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra since it was first announced last year.

Bold new body style, modern interior styling and features, much-improved power and towing, the latest safety and technology, and pretty cool multimedia capabilities as well.

And plenty of Tundra trim levels, each with various price ranges and features. One of these trim levels is unique, though.

If you have ever watched Sesame Street, there was that one segment where they sing, “one of these kids is not like the others”. Three kids would be jumping rope and one would be hopping in place. You had to tell which one is different and you won the round.

Well, for Toyota Tundra, there is one trim level that is different from the others here.

Tundra SR.

2022 Tundra Engine

The new 2022 Toyota Tundra is available with a Tundra hybrid (i-FORCE MAX) and non-hybrid base (i-FORCE).

TUNDRA FANS ALERT: Please consider joining the "TundraCrew" Facebook online forum group. It is made up of nearly 70,000 Tundra fans, owners, and enthusiasts. I am one of the members and I really enjoy it.

All Tundra trucks for 2022 utilize a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. The Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid also incorporates an electric motor that works to give considerably more power production.

Tundra i-FORCE (except Tundra SR) produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. torque. The i-FORCE MAX engine offers 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. torque.

You should be aware that a 2022 Toyota Tundra SR trim level gives owners less power than all other trim levels. It still has the twin-turbo V6 but delivers 348 horsepower and 405 lb.-ft. torque.

I thought this was important to note, since buyers should know there is less potential power than other Tundra trims. It might not make much difference to you if power is not of primary concern to you.

But it is still important to know and understand.

2022 Tundra Towing Capacity

Toyota Tundra fans have reason to be excited about new increased towing capacities for 2022.

This newest generation offers a 2022 Tundra tow capacity of “up to 12,000 pounds”. Of course, the actual maximum capabilities vary based on two-wheel-drive versus four-wheel drive, cab configuration, hybrid versus non-hybrid, and other important factors.

Look for 2022 Tundra SR to offer a towing capacity of 8,300 pounds. This is significantly lower than other Tundra trim levels, so again, proceed here with caution.

The good news is that Tundra SR still has plenty of towing power for most boats, trailers, and campers we may need to pull.

You just need to know the specifications here.

2022 Toyota Tundra Price

To me, pricing for 2022 Tundra SR is reasonable and a solid value. In fact, SR is the only trim level with a starting MSRP of under $40,000.

Buyers will find the lowest Tundra 2022 price is $35,950, which is for an SR Double Cab 4x2 with a 6.5-foot bed.

The test vehicle I evaluated was an SR CrewMax 4x2 with a 5.5-foot bed. It starts at $38,000.

Very reasonable.

2022 Tundra SR Features

A Tundra SR comes with many standard factory features that confirm its strong value.

Look for LED headlights and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. It comes with 18-inch styled steel wheels. All-new aluminum-reinforced composite bed provides strength and protection.

Inside you will find durable fabric seats, an 8-inch multimedia screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and unlimited voice commands and capabilities.

Time for Your Toyota Tundra Comments

In my opinion, a 2022 Toyota Tundra SR would be ideal for someone who needs a reliable full-size truck with good power and towing capacity. Just not as much as other trims. This person would also not need or want too many bells and whistles.

Just a capable truck more than ready for personal or work use.

What do you think of Tundra SR? If not SR, what Tundra trim level would be best for you? Do you own a new Tundra, and if so, how do you like it so far?
