The Unclear Future of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class for the U.S.

Only a few months ago, Mercedes-Benz USA made it clear that it would be passing the X-Class pickup for the time being. Now, it seems someone at Mercedes-Benz has changed their mind.

Mercedes-Benz Vans division - the group tasked with the X-Class truck - are investigating the possibility of selling the X-Class in the U.S.

"In the past year the mid-sized truck market has come back a bit. General Motors (GM.N) is launching a mid-sized truck. We are watching developments very closely, and we will take a decision at the appropriate time," said Volker Mornhinweg, head of the Mercedes-Benz Vans at a press conference.

When asked by Reuters where X-Class pickups would be built for the U.S., Mornhinweg said it would likely not be the company's plant in Argentina. The current production capacity at the plant wouldn't be able to handle the possible demand for the U.S. There is the possibility of a new plant in the U.S. to build X-Class trucks.

As we reported back in November, Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler said they would be passing on the X-Class for now due to various circumstances.
