Auction Find: The Odd Marriage of Beetle and Corvette

We'll admit we like absurd project vehicles. For example, building a drag car using a Hyundai Elantra as base earns high marks from us. But we'll admit this Volkswagen Beetle is a bit crazy even for us.

The folks at Bring A Trailer have found a 1971 Volkswagen Beetle that hides a secret. Under the skin lies a Chevrolet 350 V8 and a custom tubular chassis with suspension bits from a C4 Corvette. Oddball? Very much so.

Let's begin with the engine. The seller says it is a Chevrolet 350 V8 with a Corvette tuned port injection (from the C4). Total output is said to be about 400 horsepower. This is paired with an automatic transmission. You won't the engine in the back like other Beetles, instead it is up front. To make the space needed for the V8, a custom tubular chassis and new bodywork were made. Overall width is nine inches longer than a 1971 Super Beetle (69.3 inches for this custom vs. 62.3 inches for the Super Beetle). The front and rear suspension come from a C4 Corvette.

The interior comes directly from the C4 Corvette, complete with the digital gauge cluster and central panel for the power windows. Large tires fitted with five-spoke wheels and dual exhaust tips finish off the vehicle.

At the time of this writing, the bidding for this Beetle stands at $13,800 with five days left. If you are interested, you can check out the eBay ad here.
