Video: BMW M4 vs Tesla Model S P85D rolling-start drag race shootout

Take the high-torque 691hp Tesla Model S P85D vs. the 425hp BMW M4 Coupe in a rolling-start drag race. Who wins?

What happens when a Tesla Model S P85D takes on the 2015 BMW M4 in a rolling-start drag race? With the Tesla Model S P85D’s massive amount of horsepower and torque output and sending all that power to four wheels, we would expect the Tesla to blow away the lesser M4.

The Tesla Model S P85D comes with 691 horsepower and 687 lb-ft of torque and weights in at 4,900 lb. The BMW M4 Convertible is powered by a new 3.0 liter inline-six TwinPower turbo powerplant pumping out 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque and weights in at 4,140 lb. Doesn’t look like much of a contest. Watch the video and see what happens.

Everyone would say it’s not a fair matchup with the Tesla’s significantly more horsepower and torque over the new BMW M4. The Tesla has all that massive torque instantly available at the start to get the big sports car moving quickly. The all-electric Tesla P85D’s power is evident immediately. The Tesla launches ahead, but when the M4 power kicks in, the race is not even close. The P85d delivers its massive torque all the way to 45 mph, max power from 45 mph to 75 mph but after that, due to the lack of a second gear, it can’t keep up with the BMW M4.
