Subaru And Toyota Reveal Japan-Spec 2022 BRZ And GR86 Sport Coupes

Subaru and Toyota reveal the 2022 BRZ and GR86 sports coupe in Japan. Check out the Japan-spec models here.

Torque News reported last week Subaru and Toyota would announce the 2022 BRZ and GR86 in a joint YouTube reveal. The U.S.-specification 2022 Subaru BRZ came first, and last night, the two Japanese automakers announced the Japan-spec 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 sport coupes. The second-generation GR86 will wear a slightly different exterior design, but the 2022 GR86 will be essentially identical to the Subaru BRZ.

In the announcement last night, Toyota says that even though the two models share the Subaru Global Platform's design elements, the Gazoo Racing development team engaged in a "friendly rivalry" with the Subaru BRZ team and the GR86 will have a "distinct driving feel."

Like the BRZ, a normally-aspirated direct and port fuel injection 2.4-liter Boxer engine will power the rear-drive sports car. The 2.4-liter flat-four produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

The 2022 GR86 comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Like the BRZ, the GR86 will have a lower center of gravity than the outgoing model. Unlike BRZ, GR86 comes with a different GR-specific functional Matrix grille.

The BRZ and GR86 will be lighter, with an aluminum roof and fenders, and updated front seats and mufflers contribute to reduced weight. Body rigidity has been improved by approximately 50 percent of the first-generation model.

The BRZ and GR86 automatic versions will come with Subaru's EyeSight driver-assist technology. The sports coupe will come with the system's pre-collision safety technologies.

Torque News reported Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda doesn't want his sports car to be an exact copy of the all-new Subaru BRZ. The report from BestCarWeb says Akio Toyoda asked his development team to "differentiate" his sports car from the BRZ in terms of performance.

Toyota has not released U.S. specification GR86, and the information should come in a few weeks.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ for U.S. customers begins production this spring, and the newly redesigned sports coupe will go on sale early fall of 2021. The 2022 Subaru BRZ will launch in Japan this summer. Subaru of America and Toyota will release pricing information closer to the retailer launch. Stay tuned.
