If you can find them on dealers' lots this fall, a new report from iSeeCars says the 2022 Subaru Impreza is the third-best new hatchback you can buy. Consumer Reports (by subscription) also says the Impreza is one of the 6-Best new cars under $25,000. Keep reading to find out where the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek fits in the mix of new hatchbacks.

The sedan body style has dropped in popularity because the hatchback offers versatility, more cargo space, and still offers good fuel mileage. A report from iSeeCars determined the best new hatchbacks based on long-term reliability, value retention, fuel mileage, and highest average safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The nine-best new hatchback models

The report says the Honda Civic scores best with an overall quality score of 9 out of ten. The Toyota Corolla is second with a score of 8.9 and ties with the 2022 Subaru Impreza, with 8.9 points. They are followed by the Volkswagen Golf (8.8), Mazda3 (8.7), Hyundai Veloster (8.4), Volkswagen Golf GTI (8.1), Kia Rio (7.8), and Chevrolet Spark (7.7).

Top safety scores

The Subaru Impreza scored a perfect five-star rating with the NHTSA. We also checked the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) safety scores for the Impreza, and the compact hatchback earned a Top Safety Pick award.

What is the 2022 Subaru Impreza fuel mileage?

The EPA says the 2022 Subaru Impreza hatchback gets 31 combined mpg and 28/36 city/highway mpg in CVT automatic transmission trims. The 2022 Impreza hatchback with the 5-speed manual gearbox gets 26 combined mpg and 24/31 city/highway mpg.

Value retention

According to Kelly Blue Book's (KBB) 2021 Best Resale Value Awards, the Subaru Impreza is the best compact car. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards recognize 2021 model-year vehicles for their projected retained value through the initial five-year ownership period.

Long-term reliability

The iSeeCars report gives the Impreza hatchback an overall score of 7.9 for reliability. The Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic both score 8.1 for reliability. The report also lists the 2018 Subaru Impreza as one of the best used hatchback models under $20,000.
