This is the Quickest 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the World

Yesterday we had a piece here on TorqueNews talking about the world’s quickest 6th generation Chevrolet Camaro, which recently ran an 8.83 quarter mile to set the record for both the new Camaro and all LT1-powered production vehicles. Since before we talked about the most recent achievement of the Fireball Camaro, some folks had commented or written in, insisting that there simply has to be a new Camaro ZL1 which is quicker than the Fireball Camaro.

After all, the Fireball Camaro is based on the LT1-powered Camaro SS while the new ZL1 is, of course, powered by the factory supercharged LT4, so it seems reasonable that the people building a new ZL1 will have to do less work to reach the same point.

That might be the case, but for the time being, it appears as though the majority of the quickest 6th gen Camaros are all LT1-powered SS models, as in searching around, it appear as though the quickest new Camaro ZL1 in the world has “only” run a time of 9.98 seconds.

The World’s Quickest 6g Camaro ZL1
After receiving so many comments and emails insisting that a` 6th gen Camaro ZL1 has to be quicker than the quickest 6g Camaro SS, I did some hunting around the internet in search of a new LT4-powered ZL1 running in or near the 9-second quarter mile range. I could not find any new ZL1s in or near the 8s and I only found video proof of one new Camaro ZL1 in the 9s. That Camaro is the white ZL1 from RPM Motorsports shown in the video below was the first to run in the 9s last month with a time of 9.98 and it seems that since then, no other new ZL1 has gone quicker.

I have gone so far as to reach out to some Camaro experts, including Chris Frezza of the CamaroShow.com, and none of them were familiar with any 6th gen Camaro ZL1s running quicker than the RPM car in the video below. In short, until someone presents us with proof of a quicker 2017 Camaro ZL1, this is the quickest in the world.

This particular 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is fitted with the new 10-speed automatic transmission, a nitrous oxide setup and a set of sticky drag radial tires. We don’t have any details on the size of the nitrous shot, but with just 60 miles on the odometer, this Camaro ZL1 was the first of its kind to break into the 9-second club with a speed of 140 miles per hour.

We can expect to see quicker times from many 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1s as more owners get them to performance shops, but for the time being, the quickest 6g Camaro in the world is an SS model with an 8.83 while the quickest ZL1 has run a 9.98.
