Jaguar F-Type Review: Only V8 Engines For The 2022 Models

Forty years after the end of the legendary E-Type, Jaguar's chief designer Ian Callum has presented one of his masterpieces with the Jaguar F-Type. In 2014, the no-frills two-seater hit the streets as a convertible, and shortly thereafter also as a coupe version. For our review, we used the 2021 F-Type R AWD Convertible, which has not changed in the 2022 Model. But here is what has changed in the 2022 model year of the Jaguar F-Type.

Jaguar has been trying to invigorate its sales volume since the beginning of the year 2022 by making changes to the offer of two of its flagship models positioned at opposite ends of the spectrum, the F-Type sports coupe and the I-Pace electric crossover. Since this review is about the Jaguar F-type, the focus is only on the vehicle.

For the 2022 F-Type, Jaguar has ditched the turbocharged four-cylinder and supercharged V6 to focus on a choice of just two 5L-volume, supercharged V8s. The entry-level rear-wheel-drive version has seen its performance notably gaining from the previous version. Its 444 hp V8 allows a 0-60 mph estimated at 4.6 s, without taking into account its magnificent sound.

The middle version F-Type, named R-Dynamic, is offered with the same V8, but gains all-wheel drive to ensure it can be used in all seasons. Despite everything, the gain in motor skills does not however translate into acceleration, displaying a time identical to that of the basic livery. The R variant, which we are reviewing today, sits at the top with its all-wheel drive and its 575 hp also extracted from a 5L V8 engine allowing a 0-60 mph in 3.7s in exchange for a good substantial price, calculated in total at $120,750.

The F-Type R is drawn with a wonderful line. The line of the long bonnet flows gently over the windscreen into the roof, the rear struts are supported solidly on the massive wheel arches, in which 20-inch alloy wheels find a home. Rubber rollers in size 305/30 are fitted at the back and size 265/35 at the front.

Ian Callum designed the rear of the Jaguar F-Type without frills and with poignant simplicity. It doesn't have any decorative ornaments. The two twin tailpipes of the exhaust system and the diffuser speak an unmistakable language. The rear spoiler is cleverly concealed and does not attract attention. Only when the speed exceeds 70 mph does it extend automatically and reduce the drag coefficientby 2.5 percent, and the lift from the airstream by up to 15 percent. The harmony of the body shape of the 2022 Jaguar F-Type Convertible inspires meditative contemplation.

The F-Type is a pure two-seater. The F-Type R welcomes you with a one-piece interior. The refreshment of the series in 2020 brought a ten-inch touchscreen on board, as well as the usual assistance systems and the willingness to communicate with smartphones. Only the storage options are tight.

The cups, which find a secure footing in the two cylinders on the center console, should not be too high, otherwise they would hinder work with the selector lever.

Like I said, the interior space is very tide. It's said that one can spend $120,000 for this car and not have a wireless charger for his phone.

The V8 is started at the push of a button and comes to life with a truly animal growl. The steering wheel sits firmly in your hands, and the automatic lever slides smoothly into the forward position.

Small details can be found everywhere in the high-quality and always tidy-looking interior. The choice of materials leaves nothing to be desired, the look and feel are first class. The seats offer a lot of comfort and still keep both occupants securely in place when driving at high speed. Incidentally, you sit very low, which reinforces the sporty impression with vehemence. Shelves and compartments are all dedicated to minimalism and rather small in size.

The Drive

The 8-speed automatic delivers almost always the right translation at all times, and thanks to all-wheel drive, there are no difficulties in bringing the immense power of the eight-wheeler onto the road. The all-wheel drive is also rear-heavy, which means that provoked rear-end wedders are easily feasible and remain quite easy to control - as long as you know the oversteering characteristics of a rear-wheel drive vehicle and know how to take it.

The chassis is firm, but not unrelenting. In sport mode the muscle pack tightens the tendons again and the chosen route can be rocked through with a bang.

The brakes of the F-Type proved to be stable and easy to dose to match the character of the vehicle. In our review test, the brakes kept the vehicle under control at all times.

The steering is nicely pointed, but not overly sensitive and provides sufficient feedback. It requires - especially in sport mode - slightly higher steering forces than you are used to from other vehicles in this class. From our point of view, however, this fits perfectly with the sporty claim of such a coupé.

I think the Jaguar F-Type R still wants to be more of a faster GT than a thoroughbred super sports car, even if the performance values ​​predict otherwise. Its handling is predictable and good-natured. If desired, it can also be almost puristic, but comfort is not an issue here. Nevertheless, it generates expensive fun when driving.

With the Jaguar F-Type R facelift, the British have successfully optimized their prestigious sports car and, in doing so, specifically eliminated the few weak points. It is an honest and at the same time beautiful sports convertible/coupé, which can meet a large number of requirements in a very multifaceted way. In contrast to its predecessor, the vehicle has reached a new evolutionary level.
