What is a “strong PHEV”? Put most simply, it is a plug-in hybrid vehicle that can use electricity to solely power the vast majority of the distance it drives on a daily basis. Are there other criteria that might define a strong PHEV? Of course, and I’ll cover some of those below. How many strong PHEVs are on the market (of the 40 or so available for the current model year)? Not as many as there should be, even if we count the used ones, but I’ll cover this more below too.

There’s no denying that new vehicles have become terribly expensive in recent years. The average price of all new vehicles for sale in the U.S. is now a little over $48,000. That’s enough to make your head spin, your wallet groan, and your jaw to drop all at once!

I just wrapped up a visit with my auntie and uncle in Kauai. They want to purchase either a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or electric (EV) subcompact - midsize SUV/crossover. My family are most concerned about seating position, cargo and passenger volume, and adequate ground clearance. To help them and others looking for similar vehicles at somewhere near the average price of a new vehicle, I have collected information on all such vehicles currently or soon to go on sale in the U.S (by end of 2023).

Kia has revealed the pricing of their new EV6 for the U.S. market and the good news is that it has a lower starting MSRP, at $40,900, than almost every other compact EV SUV currently for sale. Only the VW ID.4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (when the RWD base model goes on sale) are priced lower than the EV6, and only a tad lower at $40,760 and $39,700 respectively.

The Ford Mustang Mach E is no slouch on the track. Even its non GT version puts most SUVs to shame with a blistering 5.1-second 0-60 and its GT Performance Edition tears down the track with an even more impressive 3.5 second sprint from stop to 60 miles per hour. With such speeds, how does it compare to its competition like the Polestar 2, XC40 Recharge, muscle cars, like my Challenger, or even the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

When I think of SUVs, I think of vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Mercedes G-wagon. I typically don’t give much thought to Volvo, but I really should. Volvo’s XC40 Recharge is not just a handsome SUV, it’s got plenty of features that make it one of the safest SUVs on the market, and it’s faster than the Volkswagen ID.4.

I recently spent a week driving the 2019 Volvo XC40 T5 AWD R-Design and as someone who doesn’t generally love smaller sport utility vehicles, I was really impressed by the driving dynamics and by amount of premium content in such an affordable vehicle.

Meet Vera. She’s Swedish, and she means it, damn it. She’s a badass Level 5 Volvo robot electric tractor pod almost as low to the ground as a Porsche, only three times bigger. So low, if you’re not careful, she might mow you down before her collision avoidance and passive emergency braking systems are autonomously activated! Potential roadkill beware! No airbags need apply . . .

Here’s another ex-Ford that got spit out by the blue oval to go on with life and do better without them, since partnering up with Chinese Geely, Volvo is whipping out some amazing products even a new division, and the baby XC40 electric is a prime example. A BEV competes with Jaguar iPace, Audi eTron, and Tesla Model X, all at Model 3 prices. Another ex-Ford in your future. Not bad!
