With the Rimac Nevera destroying the first hybrid Ferrari in a straight-line battle, and BMW showing us the i4 eDrive40 and I4 m50, there’s been a lot to talk about on the electric vehicle front. As the Electric revolution picks up pace, it feels like we’re nearing a tipping point at which electric vehicles will take over as the main means of transportation.

The Ford Mustang Mach E is no slouch on the track. Even its non GT version puts most SUVs to shame with a blistering 5.1-second 0-60 and its GT Performance Edition tears down the track with an even more impressive 3.5 second sprint from stop to 60 miles per hour. With such speeds, how does it compare to its competition like the Polestar 2, XC40 Recharge, muscle cars, like my Challenger, or even the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?
By Frank DiMuccio on
When I think of SUVs, I think of vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Mercedes G-wagon. I typically don’t give much thought to Volvo, but I really should. Volvo’s XC40 Recharge is not just a handsome SUV, it’s got plenty of features that make it one of the safest SUVs on the market, and it’s faster than the Volkswagen ID.4.

The first Ford Bronco was released in 1966 to be discontinued some 30 years later in 1996. 25 long years have passed and finally, the Blue Oval has released the New Bronco, a legitimate SUV with an emphasis on Utility. In ’66, the Bronco had to contend with the CJ5 Jeep. Today, how does a New Bronco compare to a Jeep Wrangler 4xe, with its torque heavy hybrid drivetrain?
By Frank DiMuccio on
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a very cool electric SUV. It’s shown itself to be off-road capable, competing in the Mexican 1000 against legends like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. The Volkswagen ID.4 may not have off-roading as its main intent, but it makes a great family vehicle.

Toyota has been stunning us with hybrid technology for quite some time, but the RAV4 Prime is a truly spectacular piece of machinery. It is the second fastest vehicle on Toyota’s line-up, and it can get 600 miles on a single tank. Jeep’s Wrangler 4xe is not nearly as economical, but it has its uses.

Yesterday, Ford unveiled their entry into the EV Truck market, the F-150 Lightning. Many fans were less than enthusiastic about the reported 300 mile range, but in 2014 BMW gave us something that eases those worries substantially; a petrol fueled Range Extender. See the i3 for example! In 2014, it won Green Car of The Year.

Ford shocked the world when it released their Mustang Mach E. The pony car moniker attached to an electric SUV is working well for the Blue Oval, but the Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is a much more subdued, but very functional EV that has found itself a very stable customer base. This little hybrid is not a high-performance sports vehicle, but instead a business/commute-oriented sedan.

Performance EVs, like the Porsche Taycan, Ford Mustang Mach E, and Tesla Model S boast impressive acceleration statistics. This simple fact is undeniable and, as a result, the National Hot Rod Association, or NHRA, has decided to open its doors to electric vehicle owners who want to show off their skills at controlling that acceleration starting soon, in 2022.

In 2017, the unique weather conditions over the Atlantic parented a great many storms, including Hurricane Harvey, one of the costliest storms that has ever occurred. Harvey wracked up more than 120 billion dollars in damage. Many people lost their lives to this devastating storm and many more lost their homes and vehicles to the flooding. If you must pack up and leave town to avoid a disaster, can your EV get you safe?

The Electric Vehicle market is dominated by cars that largely appear the same. No offense meant to the folks at the big manufacturers we know and love, like Tesla, Ford, Chevy, and Toyota, but the current EV offering is just not exciting, at least from a visual perspective. Sure, the Plaid mode Tesla has some insane speeds, but it just doesn’t hold an aesthetic candle to the light that is the Porsche Taycan.
