Toyota Motor Corp has announced that like Nissan and Mitsubishi, it will close 11 plants in Japan earlier than usual today (Wednesday September 21st) with a major typhoon bearing down on the Japanese coastline – a move likely based in part on the massive amounts of damage done by the tsunami that devastated Japan earlier this year.

Chinese auto-makers, who export their vehicles, are feeling the pressure from Brazil’s auto import substitution policy, which may accelerate Chinese plans to make cars locally in brazil. The positive factor is that Brazil will most likely be able to establish more stability for local manufacturing in the world’s fifth largest auto market.

The new 2013 Ford Police Interceptor has been validated in its most rigorous testing to date by the Michigan State Police with top scores in 0-60 acceleration, braking, and handling. No police vehicle is taken seriously that does poorly in that test.

General Motors has said it will build a next-generation mid-sized pickup in Missouri. As part of its agreement with the UAW it also said that it will reopen the Saturn assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee to build two new mid-sized vehicles there also.

After two white collar labor unions filed paperwork formally requesting the Swedish government to force Saab and parent company Swedish Automobiles into bankruptcy last week, blue collar labor union IF Metall has filed similar paperwork in an effort to help their workers collect back wages owed by Saab.

More dads are taking kids to school and picking them up according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive® that was commissioned by Chevrolet.
