Mitsubishi Motors has been struggling in the US market amidst a frenzy of rumors that some popular models will be getting the axe in the next few years but according to a report by AutoWeek, some of the automakers longest-running models in the US will see an end to production as soon as August.

On the heels of the Earth Day announcement that the electric Mitsubishi i is now available for advance ordering, the manufacturer announced a partnership with NRG Energy to pave the road those cars will cruise with EV charging stations in Texas. Japanese auto production has fallen to only 35 percent of their former output as a result of the Tohuko earthquake and tsunami, according to IHS Automotive Insight. Still the situation in Libya has an impact as well. "It's volatility that really drives people to smaller cars," said Aaron Bragman, an analyst for the auto authority.

Mitsubishi eked out a small sales gain as the car market began to recover in 2010. But by selling only 1,797 more vehicles in 2010 than 2009, the lower-tier auto retailer climbed only 3.1 percent. The U.S. auto market as a whole improved by 11.1 percent in 2010.

Since January 1, the United Kingdom is offering generous grants to buyers of electric vehicles. They can see the price of their electric vehicle reduced by a quarter, up to 5000 pounds, or about $7500. It’s similar to the federal tax credits offered in the U.S.

Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled its first all-electric production vehicle, the MiEV, bound for the North American market in November 2011. The MiEV (pronounced My E V) has been produced in the Japanese market since 2009 and shown at the New York Auto Show. Its release has been long expected and the model introduced at the LA Auto Show is updated from the Japanese market version with a wider body (for us wider North Americans) and required safety features.
