Electric Vehicle News and Reviews

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way in a short time. Barely a decade has passed since the ambitious Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors introduced the world to an electric car capable of traveling more than 300 miles on a single charge. Since then, Elon Musk and Tesla have convinced many dubious onlookers that electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but that they can become the future of transportation.

Other automakers have joined the EV movement at very different rates. The Nissan Leaf, for example, debuted in 2010 and went on to become the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the world for a time. Competition from the BMW i3 followed, as well as the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt and its all-electric successor the Chevy Bolt EV, but only the Tesla Model 3 has been able to steal the Leaf's crown. Heading into a new decade, electric vehicles are set to go from strength-to-strength, with new models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV competing in the entry-level category and the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan, or Jaguar I-PACE vying with Tesla at the top end of the market.

With entire classes of vehicle still lacking an electric version, such as pick-up trucks and affordable SUVs, there's huge potential for expansion and growth in the EV marketplace. For now, Tesla is still blazing the trail, but legacy manufacturers are lining up to electrify their fleets and promising startups like Rivian and Byton are waiting in the wings with exciting new electric vehicles.

The future is bright for EVs and you can keep up to date with all the latest stories right here on Torque News.

Tesla has started production of a new Model Y variant at Giga Berlin with batteries supplied by BYD. The new Model Y variant's 45,000 euros starting price makes it a great offer. However, there are concerns even amongst die-hard Tesla fans regarding the safety of the BYD batteries which now power the new Model Y.

As of today, Tesla is undoubtedly the undisputed leader in the electric car market. Despite the rise of rivals such as BYD, the firm led by Elon Musk continues to be the largest manufacturer of BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) worldwide, thanks mainly to the success that the Model Y is achieving in the main international markets (China, the US and Europe).

Kia’s hot streak hit its 9th consecutive month in terms of US sales, with 68,205 units sold in April. However, despite it being another excellent sales month for Kia, their electric vehicle sales continued a negative trend with sales of the EV6 and the Niro both down, again.

Within the last three months, Tesla has already cut the prices of its models twice; an aggressive policy that has shaken the entire EV market and that also has repercussions on the second-hand market. Curiously, this is a strategy that is favoring them a lot, managing to be at the top of the sales of used electric cars.

In an attempt to increase demand, since the start of the year, Tesla has cut vehicle prices several times. However, today Tesla has increased prices for the same reason. The $250 price increase is not meaningful enough to materially affect the company's gross margins, however, is likely targeted at creating FOMO in people waiting for further price cuts.

I have read more than a few posts on social media from people complaining about the fuel efficiency of Kia’s Sorento and Sportage PHEVs. More specifically, I have seen several complaints about the estimated range remaining being far below the advertised EPA ranges of 460 miles (Sorento) and 430 miles (Sportage). I’ve cracked the code and I’m going to tell you how you can too.

Since Elon Musk made the announcement that Tesla is targeting the end of Q3 to start Cybertruck deliveries, there has been a palpable uptick in anti-Cybertruck sentiment. And even more bizarrely these negative Cybertruck comments are concentrated on sites where Tesla enthusiasts meet such as Tesla-focused subreddits, comment sections of EV and Tesla-focused YouTube channels, news sites, and Twitter pages.
