At the recent Giga Berlin Model Y delivery event, Elon Musk finally gave us an update regarding the new vehicle colors expected to come out of the new factory. According to Musk, there will be two new colors - a new 13 layer red and an 8 layer liquid silver.

Tesla unlike most luxury vehicle manufacturers does not offer a wide gamut of paint color options for its vehicles. Currently, the only 5 colors Tesla vehicles come with are black, white, blue, gray, and red.

In comparison, Tesla’s luxury vehicle competitors Mercedes, BMW, and, Audi offer 5 to 10 times the color options than that of Tesla.

Despite the limited paint offerings Tesla has had a long history of well-publicized issues with the paint quality on its cars. Owners at times have complained their cars were delivered with part of the paint missing, having dirt particles underneath the paint, and overall just not being on par with what’s expected from a luxury vehicle.

Responding to this, Elon Musk has promised to bring online the most advanced paint shop in the Berlin Gigafactory. And at the Giga Berlin delivery event earlier this week, Elon Musk gave us more detail regarding the new colors.

Musk asked about the upcoming new colors responded saying…

With respect to colors and which colors are going to be available from this factory, colors are always a challenge because when you think about colors, you don’t only need to manufacture it, but you also need to service it and fix it for 20 years. We got to think, ‘What are we going to put the service team through?’

Having said that, Musk still reiterated that Tesla will be offering two new colors for vehicles made in Giga Berlin.

We have to be careful with the total number of colors, but we are going to make some special colors here, and it’s about more than the color itself, but the layers of paint in order to get the dimensionality. We are going to make a very special red, which probably a lot of people have seen. It’s like 13 layers of paint. And we will also have a silver with maybe eight layers. It’s also going to be special – a kind of liquid silver.

Elon Musk has previously said the layers of paint will allow Tesla vehicles to subtly change their color depending on viewing angle.

Musk said that the new colors should be coming to the Model Y in the next few months.

Currently, there are speculations the new red color Tesla will be offering to that of the crimson red on Elon Musk’s personal Model S. However, this is still speculation but we will be sure to keep you updated as more information comes out regarding the new paint scheme. Hi Tinsae,

I have a Black Model X 2018 and want to get the new Model X in Liquid Silver!
So for your survey I vote "yes - I'm waiting for this new color" before I plunk down my $250. Do you know when they will be offering Liquid Silver paint for the Model X?
I have to wait till next year for delivery of a Model X. I might as well wait to get the color I want.
I'll drive my Black Model X till then.

Thank you for your article and a reply.
