The new Corvette has really taken the world by surprise with its performance and the sporty appearance and for good reason, but the car does not have a perfectly symmetrical appearance due to its side view mirror setup.

The 2020 C8 Corvette is an absolutely amazing looking machine and the more time goes on the more we learn about it. The performance of the car speaks for itself and with the latest leak of performance specs we know this car is going to be just as beastly as it is beautiful.

There are a lot of pieces of information missing about this car and every now and then we get dropped a new tidbit of info that helps us see the full picture but the latest one is kind of strange.

A lot of changes were made in the C8 Corvette's move from front engine to it's mid engine layout. Most of them are obvious, but some, like this one, are a little bit more subtle and a lot less performance oriented.

Automotive Symmetry

There is beauty in symmetry, whether it is a physical facial feature or on an automotive piece of art, symmetry is the first step to beauty. That's why the decision GM went with to make one of the side view mirrors stick out further than the other is strange but there is a reason. If you look at the car from straight on you will see the passenger side view mirror sticks out 2 full inches more than the drivers side does.

This is definitely strange looking and you may ask yourself "why?" but there is a reason for it. GM's decision to do this was not because they wanted to throw a wrench into the "symmetry is beauty" thing but instead to make the mirrors more useful. The rear end of the 2020 C8 Corvette is wide and tall due to the mid engine layout. This makes using the mirrors more difficult due to limited visibility past the rear end so GM did what they had to do, they pushed the mirror out further. This allows the mirror to actually be useful because it's now past the fenders of the rear end.

GM said that in addition to visibility reasons, the differing lengths are also required to meet some international laws. The 2020 C8 is the first Corvette to be sold as a truly international vehicle, and the first to be available in right hand drive. Odds are good the stalk lengths are swapped depending on which side the driver is on.
