Subaru’s top three all-wheel-drive vehicles, Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek made the top-20 least frequently stolen vehicles in America list. Does EyeSight make it harder for thieves to steal your new Subaru?

Subaru vehicles have been most-targeted by thieves in the past because the Subaru WRX and WRX STI are taken for their performance parts. And older Subaru Legacy sedans and wagons have been on the top-ten stolen vehicle list in Colorado in July. But a new report by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) this week shows the newer 2016-2018 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek and, Legacy is on the least frequently stolen vehicles list.

There were no Subaru vehicles that showed up on the most frequently stolen vehicles list.

The HLDI gives each vehicle a relative theft-claim frequency, with 100 being the average among all vehicles. In the top 20 list of least frequently stolen cars, the Subaru Legacy with EyeSight is number 6 on the list, Subaru Forester with EyeSight is #8, Subaru Outback with EyeSight #12, Subaru Crosstrek is #14, and Subaru Crosstrek with EyeSight is #16.

6. Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy, is the 6th least stolen vehicle from the 2016-2018 model years, according to a study of insurance theft claims conducted by the Highway Data Loss Institute. At number six, it seems to fly under the radar of criminals with a relative theft-claim frequency of 17.

8. Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is a popular choice among compact SUVs and is the brand’s number two top-selling vehicle in the Subaru all-wheel-drive stable. It’s not so popular among car thieves, with a relative theft-claim frequency of 20.

12. Subaru Outback

The Outback, Subaru of America’s top-selling all-wheel-drive SUV/Crossover is number twelve on the least stolen list and has a reported relative theft-claim frequency of 22.

14. Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is the brand’s number three top-selling vehicle and comes in at number fourteen and sixteen on the least stolen list. Crosstrek comes in at a relative theft-claim frequency of 25 and when equipped with EyeSight it has a frequency of 26.

You might be wondering why the new Subaru Outback, Forester, Crosstrek and Legacy equipped with EyeSight driver assist technology are all least targeted by car thieves. It doesn't have anything to do with EyeSight making your vehicle harder to steal. Often cars are stolen because they are easy targets. Customers who purchase the Subaru with EyeSight are possibly more careful about not leaving windows open, leaving keys in the ignition, or parking them in unlit areas overnight making them an easy target for car thieves.

"Customers who purchase the Subaru with EyeSight are possibly more careful about not leaving windows open, leaving keys in the ignition, or parking them in unlit areas overnight making them an easy target for car thieves."

Really not sure what that would be? Maybe these Subarus just are not targeted by car thieves. the WRX has Eyesight, but did not make the least stolen list so I don't see the correlation.

Although the author is giving an opinion, it seems to make sense. I'm easily convinced that we buy certain Subarus largely BECAUSE they feature EyeSight tech. Heightened safety and security dictate our behaviors at all times. Whereas, WRX likely isn't one of those certain Subarus. While the the WRX is certain to be safer if the buyer uses the EyeSight tech, that is probably the last thing that buyers have in mind when buying a vehicle like that. They buy the WRX for the thrill of renowned sports handling, styling, and features.

Who makes the kayak carrying crossbar shown on the last pic in your 1084/ least -likely-to-be-stolen article...(the blue Crosssstrek on the boat ramp with one orange+ kayak mounted)? I have a 2016 Outback I'd like to fit with one like it...

Would you please change the racks in the Outback. Put racks similar to Forester on the outback. Current design sucks
