Tonight, on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the newest (and possibly the best performing) roofless supercar was introduced to the automotive universe in the form of the new Lamborghini Aventador J – an open air, lightweight version of the current production Aventador with only a single copy of this new Raging Bull to be built and sold.

As you can see in the image on the right, the Lamborghini Aventador J looks a great deal like the standard production Aventador but it is an extreme roadster; with the roof, windshield, side windows and back glass removed in an effort to offer an unforgettable driving experience and reduce the vehicle’s weight. Aiding in this effort, the air conditioning system, navigation system and sound system have been removed but to add that wow factor, the dash and seats are made of a new lightweight material called Carbonskin. This new building material is soft enough that it can be used for the seats but hard (and light) enough to allow the Italian supercar builder to use this new carbon fiber mesh for the dash construction. Lamborghini states this lowers the weight of the Aventador J considerably but they haven’t given an exact number – while simply stating that it will weigh less than the 3,472 pound dry weight of the standard Aventador.

In addition to cutting off the glass and the roofline, the Lamborghini Aventador J sports a unique front and rear fascia designed to increase aerodynamics while also improving high speed downforce. Like so much else on the Aventador J, the unique nose and tail are comprised of carbon fiber to keep weight down without compromising body rigidity. Oh, and this special body dressing also helps to make the Aventador J one of the most incredibly aggressive (and incredibly awesome) looking supercars of all time – but that is just my opinion.

Mechanically, the Lamborghini Aventador J is identical to the Lamborghini Aventador, packing a 700 horsepower 6.5L V12 engine that channels the power to all four wheels via a dual clutch transmission. The J also sports the unique pushrod suspension and high performance braking system that should make this one of the best handling roadsters of all time.

If you are wondering how the company came to the name Aventador J, the “J” is taken from the FIA Appendix J, which addresses the rules for the various classes of race cars. Interestingly, accompanying the announcement of the Aventador J was a mention of the 1970 Lamborghini Jota that was an ultra high performance variation of the Lamborghini Miura. Perhaps the Aventador J is also intended to pay homage to the '70 Jota. Unfortunately, the 1970 Jota never saw production but that is where the Aventador J is different.

The Lamborghini Aventador J shown in the gallery on the right is not a concept – it is the full production version of the new supercar and it is the only one that will be built. When the Aventador J leaves the Geneva Motor Show, it will be sold to a private owner and that person will have to claims of owning one of the most rare and highest performance vehicles of all time. Lamborghini hasn’t mentioned where the Aventador J will be sold or whether or not a buyer is already lined up but the Italian coachbuilder proclaimed that “the Aventador success story has only just begun” – serving as a hint of future high performance models based on the awesome new Aventador.
